What Ukraine’s month-long Russia offensive means for the war

In a single month, Ukraine claims to have taken 500 square miles of Russian territory and to control more than a 100 settlements in the Kursk region.

It is a bold and surprising strategy employed by President Volodomyr Zelenskyy’s forces, that has taken both his enemy and allies by surprise. The campaign, he says, has prevented Russia’s Vladimir Putin from opening a new northern front in Ukraine.

But, analysts are split on whether Ukraine’s push into Kursk is a smart or dangerous move by Ukraine’s leader – in the same month, with some Ukraine’s most experienced troops occupied in Kursk, Russia have pushed their forces deeper into the Donbas and are poised to take the Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk.

So why did Ukraine’s leader take this risk and why is the past month of fighting between Russia and Ukraine some of the most significant in the war to date?

With thanks to Professor Mark Galeotti – his latest book, co-written with Anna Arutunyan is called ‘Downfall: Prigozhin and Putin, and the New Fight for the Future of Russia’

  1. Russia broke through the lines whilst a rotation was happening and gain a large amount of ground, Ukraine had to do something to try to get russia to pull troups from the lines where the break through happened, this didnt work as they pulled troups from else where in eastern Ukraine.

This gained land from russian territory can be used to trade lands in any peace talks in the future.

Also ukraine needed to do this so they can hit the airfields that are hitting ukraine troups on the line in ukraine as the west would not give permission to hit these airfields..

  2. What it means for the war?
    1. Zelensky used the last few elite professional well-equipped brigades meant for Donbass front to attack Kursk region.
    2. Donbass front has collapsed: Russian army is taking at least 1 settlement a day, and mind you, beyond Pokrovsk NATO did not build any major defense lines; Ukrainians are surrendering (sometimes whole units).
    3. In Kursk region, elite Ukrainian forces were either destroyed or suffered heavy losses. Russians are slowly pushing Ukrainians out.
If NATO-Zelensky's idea behind the Kursk adventure was to draw Russian forces from Donbass, it failed; if the idea was to take territories and force Russia to exchange part of the Kursk region for Donbass, Kherson, Zaporozhie, and Crimea, it failed; if the idea was to start civil unrest in Russia, it failed spectacularly. Now, people are even more in support of the Special Operation than they were before.

  3. Fireworks just like this "counteroffensive" are impressive, bright and attract atteattention but short-lived. This clown comedian has a personality cult syndrome and is desperate for headlines and attention giving zero Fs for the impact of his clueless and idiotic decisions on his overstretched troops.

  4. It was a miscalculation😂. If CIA was behind this strategy, USA should be worried😂. Even Nazi Germany was not able to keep a portion of Russia territory. It is very idiot to think one second that the actual Ukraine could handle.

  5. Are the invading troup still alive now? easy to stay in media houses and spin out nonsense when lives are lost. Instaed of finding a way for peace, the vagabonds are here spinning out rubbish

  6. It's been a disaster, the Elite brigades was sent in by Zelensky with the help of us Brits who planned the whole incursion on a suicide mission, thousands have been KIA, and to add Ukraine have not captured any territory, just passed through it and a lot of these troops more than likely won't return.

  7. Our BBC and the Channel 'Times Radio' keep still telling porkies, they both said that the plan which took 6 months in the making to invade Russia has been a success so far and doing well, what with thousands of dead troops, I wonder if our BBC and other British TV stations will divulge the losses of our lads, I very much doubt it.

  8. Putin is not desperately trying to regain the initiative, on the contrary thousands of these alleged Elite brigades are being annihilated complete with their hardware and he's certainly not humiliated but more so surprised why they even thought about advancing into Russia in the first place, didn't someone tell these troops you're more than likely not returning back home.

  9. Why are you criticizing my illegal actions now when you overlooked his illegal actions? says the criminal. He probably doesn't know that the world is progressing. Anti-terrorism activities are carried out all over the world to maintain law and order. Just because you don't like it doesn't give you a reason to invade other countries with force as you please. What has Putin been doing for the eight years from the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 to 2022? If he recognized that there were human rights violations in Ukraine that could not be ignored, why didn't he immediately raise the issue to the UN Security Council? If he had done so, he could have stopped the violence on both sides by sending inspection teams and UN observers to the area. He could have investigated the facts and arrested and prosecuted those responsible if there were any serious human rights violations or other criminal acts. On the other hand, the United States is obligated to raise the issue to the UN whenever it carries out military action abroad. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council responsible for the international community, it is natural that he should follow such legal procedures, but Putin did nothing at all. Why? He knew that the conflict in Ukraine was nothing more than a legitimate security operation commonly carried out around the world to suppress armed separatist terrorists. He feared that if he filed a complaint with the UN and a UN investigation team was sent to the area, the atrocities committed by separatist terrorist groups would also be revealed. Putin has not raised any issues with the UN regarding Ukraine's internal affairs, and without a single country that shares his ideals and acts with him, he has suddenly launched a unilateral military invasion of a legitimate UN member state and has been carrying out the outrageous act of attacking civilians for two and a half years. Without a single country that shares his ideals and joins in military action with him, he suddenly and unilaterally launched an illegal military invasion without raising any issues with international organizations. The other member states that swore to faithfully abide by the UN Charter when they joined must be looking at his self-centered, self-centered actions that ignore the UN with distrust and anger, finding no justification for them.

  10. Russia knew the build up with their satellite technology im sure the west knew it too.. Russia did think Ukraine will dare to do that cause logically it does not make sense for Ukraine do that lets see how its unfolds eventually they will withdraw there looks like Russia ain't diverting any of its troops in donbas they are now capitalizing

  11. It's quite easy to get into Russia, especially from Ukraine. Look at how big their borders are. As someone who is Ukrainian and used to live in Donbass, I can assure you, EU/US brainwashes people at it's max. Adequate local Ukrainians are thankful for Russians for the help. Outside of Donbass Ukrainians forgot everything they been through together with Russians, started all the Euro Maidans, started all the Neo-Nazi stuff going on, supported anti-Russian road for years, invaded our FRIENDLY TO EVERYONE Donbass area, our kids, our homes, our land, our future. They removed all WW2 statues and instead of them making Official country's Nazi's statues, changing street names for theirs, how is that normal? Shushkevych, Stetsko, Bandera and so on are well known Nazi's who fought for Hitler, yet they are praising them for being heroes. If not Russia, there would way more than 45k deaths in Donbass since 2014. And let me remind you, more than half of these people were local normal people who has nothing to do with the conflict. All they wanted is peace. You can't even imagine how many bad people there is outside of Donbass Ukraine. Literally. I, myself lost a lot of friends, family relatives and people I knew, good people. We were begging for Russians to help us, and I will be respecting their decision for my whole life. I am honestly ashamed of being Ukrainian today because of every crime Ukrainian government and their Azov, Kraken, Aidar and so on battalions did to our people. But I am proud to be Donbass one. Please, don't let to fool yourself with all that propaganda where Russians are bad while Ukrainians are good. It's not like that at all. Don't forget that Russia was always EU/US enemy, for centuries and they are willing to do everything to harm them. The only good Ukrainians are those who live in Donbass area and those who stuck outside of Donbass but doesn't support local government nor any of their movements. There is plenty of them. Unfortunately, it's crazy hard to leave the country. And a lot of people just being scared of talking something against their government because instantly SBU Services will knock on your door, literally. And you either will be locked up, beaten to death or you instatly gonna go to the field… Look wider, please, people! May people who lost their lifes in Donbass Rest in Peace.
