Starmer pressed on changes to winter fuel payment for older people

The Tory leader, Rishi Sunak, accused the prime minister of taking the winter fuel payment away from low-income pensioners to give to ‘highly paid train drivers’ at PMQs.

Keir Starmer told MPs the Tory leadership hopeful Kemi Badenoch had previously expressed support for this measure and that the Tories would be in opposition for a ‘very, very long time’ if the party continues to pretend everything is fine with the economy.

  1. Seems a little ironic for the party that removed £20 from the poorest households in Britain while campaigning to lift the cap on bankers bonuses to be questioning the motives of the current government! Just saying!🤷‍♀️😂 let’s have some more of their truly useful decisions like say…. Reducing the tax on essentials like Champaign!🤦‍♀️😂

  2. Starmer seems to forget the question asked. If only we could fire him for dereliction of duty and failed promises after, how many months in charge? and the country sliding into a depression.

  3. So they knew that questions was coming, and instead of having an actual answer, that the public might gain some understanding from, he uses the time to try and show hypocrisy. What a man, what a leader!

  4. Starmer needs to be voted out, everyone I know is sooooo depressed since the labour crowd came in!!some even talking about leaving the uk,the country they love BUT not the government they love!!Chrissy

  5. I'm not into politics but the years Rishi Sunnak was PM we had few extra payments that were welcome received for a lot of people, now is like we are going downhill and proud about it

  6. This country deserves more than these individuals. If they are the best we have, we really have a problem. We've gone from bad to worse. A government so out of touch with the general population. They dont listen to the people, and Starmer is ignighting the unrest. The people are acting the way they are, because they aren't being heard, it's not rocket science. When the very wealth the taxpayers create is given away to people who are better off, and the needy pushed further into poverty, it's wrong. We have given wealth away to other countries, who had no need of it. Only when a country is financially stable, should it be helping others, not when it's in turmoil, and not at the cost of the people who create the wealth, in the first place. The higher you go up in society, are the real predators and the biggest criminals.

  7. yes he cuts the winter fuel payments and yet gives 10 billion pounds for pay rises to help the poor train drivers top up there £70000 per year wages and also bows down to what the unions say.tipical socialist labour

  8. @labourparty – this is absolutely appalling. Stealing from pensioners to fund already overpaid train drivers. As a young person with elderly parents and relatives, who I care about deeply, I certainly won’t be voting for you again.

  9. Wait a minute… Kier’s response was to point out the sensible idea of means tested payouts. In other words… if you’re struggling, you get more and if you’re in Costa del Mayfair you get less (or nothing) from the gov for your heating bill.
Of course Kier’s against the most logical solution. 😂

  10. Pensioners just above the tax threshold will be £80 poorer when the pension rises by£400 next year , they've lost £200 winter fuel benefit this year and £200 next year so the pension rise as been swallowed up,they then have to pay tax on the £400 pension which is £80 ,if you are
Over 80 years old its even worse because they lose £600 winter fuel benfit

  11. 'MPs will get a pay rise of 5.5% from April, lifting their annual salary to £91,346, Parliament's pay and expenses watchdog has announced.' BBC News 15th March, 2024.

  12. My 91 year old mum will freeze now because of this labour goverment , she came through the war years ,worked & paid into the system & now battling cancer & this is how she is treated by this labour goverment

  13. Starmer has authorised another £1b to Ukraine. The Winter Fuel Allowance costs £2b. He hates you, hates your family and this country. Labour needs to kick this evil robot to touch before there's nothing left

  14. I never thought Rishi would actually be wright about something and i never thought I would say this but Rishi is spot on with everything he said, even though I still dont like him, sorry Rishi 😁

  15. Winter fuel payments have only been cut for wealthy pensioners that can afford to pay. The pension is going up £400 a year so this will alleviate it. And the Tories planned to cut the payments for ALL if they got in. So, moving on….

  16. Starmer thats rubbish, old people in the UK on a low value pension, would never say they don't need the winter fuel payment, the gas and electricity costs in thw winter are exorbitant

  17. Pensioners on £260 a week may also be getting help with rent or mortgage interest. If none needed then £260 per week is plenty to live on in reasonable comfort and you don’t really need the extra support of WFP

  18. I voted for Sunak because at the end of the day, he made more sense. He refused to pander to the British people because he optimistically thought they were too clever to fall for it. But of course the public aren't all that clever, and now they can suffer from a Labour government
