  1. > Europe’s top court on Tuesday upheld a 2.4 billion euro ($2.65 billion) fine imposed on Google for abusing its dominant position by favoring its own shopping comparison service.

    > The fine stems from an antitrust investigation by the European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union, which concluded in 2017.

    > The Commission said at the time that Google had favored its own shopping comparison service over those of its rivals.

    > The ECJ on Tuesday dismissed the appeal and upheld the Commission’s fine.

    > “We are disappointed with the decision of the Court,” a Google spokesperson told CNBC on Tuesday.

    > “This judgment relates to a very specific set of facts. We made changes back in 2017 to comply with the European Commission’s decision. Our approach has worked successfully for more than seven years, generating billions of clicks for more than 800 comparison shopping services.”

    > To address European concerns, Google in 2017 made changes that meant it will have to bid in the same way as competitors for advertising slots within shopping search results.

    > The Google decision caps off another major case for the EU after the ECJ on Tuesday also confirmed a European Commission decision from 2016 that Apple
should pay 13 billion euros in back taxes in Ireland.

    > Regulators are mounting pressure on Alphabet-owned Google globally. In March, the EU launched an investigation into Alphabet under its sweeping Digital Markets Act, which scrutinizes the practices of tech companies in Europe.

    > In the U.S. Google is in the midst of an antitrust case against the Department of Justice with regard to its advertising business after losing another antitrust case earlier this year.

  2. Make the fuckers pay. Let them know EU is not USA where they can get their way with lobbying and bribes.

  3. >The Commission said at the time that Google had favored its own shopping comparison service over those of its rivals.

Not trying too bootlick but this is such a joke always.

Just say you need extra money cause you don’t have a tech industry and move on.

  4. And this is why populist right wing politicians are opposed to the EU – the big businesses and foreign states that covertly fund them, don’t like being held to account by a government big enough to stand up to them.

  5. Do Google think we’re that much stupid?

They are literally saying they made changes to comply on the same year the case was resolved. This means the European case has a base, and Google was fined for their “wrongdoing” until that moment.

Fixing something doesn’t mean you avoid consequences.

Robbing a bank and returning the money after caught won’t mean you avoid consequences

  6. Even better, Apple is ordered by Europe to pay the 13bn euro in outstanding taxes to Ireland for illegal tax advantage. Something Ireland by the way has always fought against side by side with apple because they prefer to have big companies tax free in Ireland rather than having them pay the taxes their citizens have to pay.

  7. >We are disappointed..

    You don’t say.

I am disappointed that despite being on the top of the game for decades, having the best ad tool there is, hundreds of billions in revenue, billions in profit, yet still trying to squeeze every fucking dollar wherever possible, including shoddy tactics and screwing up market.

EU should have made it 230 billions. Stupid google.
