  1. Putin wants to use his own jets to fly to Türkiye

    — Russian President Vladimir Putin has postponed several official visits to Türkiye since last year, with officials citing multiple reasons.

    — Putin has requested to fly to Türkiye with Russian fighter jet escorts, primarily due to concerns about Ukraine’s capability to shoot down aircraft.

    — The request for Russian fighter jets to fly into Turkish airspace is complex, as Turkey’s NATO-aligned air defense systems may perceive the Russian jets as enemy targets. There are concerns about whether Türkiye would disable NATO systems to accommodate this demand.

    — Russian and Turkish officials are in discussions about a potential visit in early October, but the demand for Russian fighter jet escorts makes scheduling difficult. The last time Putin visited Türkiye was in 2014.

    — Former Turkish ambassadors noted that while Türkiye may send fighter jets to escort foreign heads of state, it is highly unusual for a leader to request bringing their own fighter jets.

    — Putin’s security team has also raised concerns about staying in Ankara. They consider the major hotels Hilton, Sheraton, and JW Marriott unsafe due to their U.S. ownership.

  2. Turkey is not party to the Rome Statute.

Then again, why is Turkey who is part of NATO allowing Putin to visit?

  4. that makes it a lot easier for Ukraine to take him down. Imagine the turmoil if they downed turkish fighter jets while trying to hit Putins plane.

  5. Hopefully it happens and Ukraine is able to sneak in some willing Chechens with some Stingers/Iglas. Do the world a favor into bringing the world closer to peace.

  6. Ahh shucks. It would be a great tragedy if Putin’s aircraft was to suffer an inflight explosion from a manpad. Just thinking out loud here.

  7. Wtf? Flying with his own escort is the worst possible idea. The cost to Ukraine of attacking goes way down.

If Ukraine were to attack Turkish escort planes in Turkish airspace it would be a horrendous diplomatic disaster for Ukraine and might cost them the war. But if Ukraine were to attack Russian planes in Turkish airspace it would be a minor incident.

The worst possible outcome for Putin would be if *only* his escorts were shot down. And Ukraine issued an announcement that nothing of value to Russia remained.
