Just had a tooth pulled this morning and feeling pretty sorry for myself. Whenever I’m not feeling 100% it’s either mash potatoes or a Heinz tomato soup and soup didn’t feel right with a gaping whole in the gob. What are your go to comforts for when you’re feeling poorly or a bit sorry for yourself?

  1. Depends on what kind of illness!

Cold or flu – hearty and hot meals
Feeling tired or run down – junk food, snacky things like crisps sweets etc
Diarrhoea or nausea – BRAT diet / nothing at all lol

  2. Bachelor’s Cream of Asparagus Cup A Soup with croutons. I don’t care that it makes my pee smell green afterwards, this is self care.

  3. Wow not just me – always mash every time my tonsillitis loves it

  4. Dippy egg and soldiers. Skin the egg and mash it up in a bowl with the bread, using a fork. Thank me later.

  5. Corned beef sandwiches, white bread and lots of butter.

  6. Rowntree’s jelly, made up from one of those packets where you dissolve the cubes in boiling water. I only ever fancy that when I’m ill.

  7. When recovering from a headache I used to spread liver pâté on toast and then toast the lot till it bubbled and went brown in places.

  8. Cheese on toast cut up in to little squares in chicken soup

  9. A warm bowl of plain garden peas, nothing else. Something about eating a bowl of little green balls makes me like I’m healthy.

  10. Big bowl of mashed potatoes with baked beans mixed in

  11. I get migraines, when I wake up and feel better. I will kick a horse to the floor, for a bowl of angel delight – butterscotch if you must know.

  12. Mashed potato and cheese is pretty awesome. Especially if you use some proper butter.

  13. I rarely have any sense of smell when I’m ill, so nothing!

  14. Just rounds and rounds of heavily buttered toast. Crappy white sliced preffered in this instance.

  15. If I’m really ill and can’t function but need to eat, I make tinned tomato soup and hot buns.

If I’m sick but occasionally vertical, I made some form of [chinese chicken soup](https://thewoksoflife.com/black-chicken-soup/) with noodles.

I live alone, so getting sick can be a bit of a nightmare. So I keep tins of soup, keep-forever part baked buns, frozen chicken stock (and a big collection of painkillers) in stock at all times.

  16. I hate it at all other times, but when I’m feeling ill, literally all I ever feel like eating is a cheese and tomato sandwich. Has to be baby plum tomatoes and grated vintage or farmhouse cheddar, with cracked black pepper.

  17. Youtiao dunked in warm soy milk. Or youtiao with congee.

  18. The ultimate comfort food is a hedgehog supper aka bread soldiers with a bowl of milk to dip them in. If I’m trying to be a bit more grown up then leek and potato soup is a good one that feels comforting and vaguely nourishing.

  19. When I’m feeling poorly, I buy a bargain bucket of the filthiest chicken. Usually from Chicken Palace. That sorts me right out

  20. Crunchy Nut Cornflakes, not sure why, but I always crave them when I’m ill.

  21. Depends on the type of poorly. If it’s stomach based I have digestives and dry crackers, with a big mug of tea or squash. If it’s cold related I like beans on toast or Omelette. If it’s pain then I want the dirtiest takeaway I can get my hands on.

  22. Heinz tomato soup and milk loaf. That round shaped bread you could get in the 80s

  23. Either cheese on toast with beans on top, or beans on toast with shitloads of cheese grated on top. Extra mature cheddar of course

  24. Also Heinz soup. Tomato, chicken, minestrone or mushroom.

  25. Macaroni and cheese. To the extent that when I feel a craving for macaroni and cheese, I run a systems check to see if I’m getting sick. If I’m very ill, chips and gravy.

  26. For self-inflicted types of poorly, it’s always a MASSIVE bowl of pasta, with a vegetable Oxo cube sprinkled in and loads of cheese melted on.

Often followed by a snooze and nightmares.

  27. Refried Bean and cheese burrito. Literally, you heat up the beans in the microwave and then put them in a tortilla with cheese. Maybe some salsa.

  28. We’re all poorly with the ‘start of term germs’. We’ve had beef stew and dumplings with potato, carrot and chunky onions made using bovril cubes.

  29. My gran used to put a dollop of mash in the middle of a bowl of tomato soup.

  30. Dhall with (chippy) chips. It’s like chips with curry, but better. 100% stodge.

  31. Batchlors pasta n sauce, cheese and broccoli. Shits been my go to since I was like 5

  32. Tea and toast, fish fingers, or one of those cheap children’s pizza’s from the chilled section of a supermarket. Bland and familiar.
