  1. They also are waiting for wet weather to set in. It’s exceptionally difficult to fight during the mud season in Ukraine. This will definitely take any steam out of russian offensive.

  2. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2024/09/12/7474736/) reduced by 71%. (I’m a bot)

    > President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed that Russian troops have launched a counter-offensive in Kursk Oblast.

    > On 11 September, the Deep State monitoring project reported that the situation on the left flank of the Ukrainian grouping in Russia's Kursk Oblast has deteriorated, as Russian forces have begun active assault operations.

    > On 5 September, he said that Russian soldiers' "Sacred duty" is to win back the part of Russia?s Kursk Oblast currently controlled by the Ukrainian military.

  3. This was always the risk of the Kursk operation. It was clear about a week in that the Russians were not taking the bait to move forces from Donetsk.

  4. I mean this HAD to be factored in before they went into Kursk, if anything I think they had already written it off as a loss, it’s just somewhat more painful now than it otherwise would have been but there was no point in leaving their best men there. The concerning part is that they’re seeming to have difficulty controlling their retreat, which really isn’t good.

But all these media articles saying “can Ukraine save it” and “how should they go about defending it” have looooooong missed the boat. We’ve been in the “minimize damage” phase for a while now.

  5. I mean, it was always clear that this territory was a tactical playing chip, not a strategic one. If Russia has had to withdraw men and materiel from elsewhere to counter-attack in Kursk, then that is indeed going exactly as planned.

The hope, of course, is that this is enough to make a difference in the east; which I am less confident about.

  6. Kursk is probably not important anyway, but they should at least put more Ukrainian troops there as they can use that as a deployment point for future incursions into Moscow. Kursk is also 30km squared land, with the rate of how Russia is invading Ukraine, theyll probably recapture all of Kursk by 2030
