  1. I’m very glad this was spotted… And dealt with appropriately.

There are very few crimes—even in war—for which the appropriate action is straight-up summary execution, but perfidy is one of them.

Perfidy isn’t just a crime because *it’s bad*. Perfidy is a crime because it risks the lives of everybody who makes a good-faith effort to surrender. Surrender only works if those surrendering can be trusted to be non-combatants. If they cannot be established as non-combatants, they’ll be killed.

The laws of armed conflict exist specifically to make wars less horrible for all parties involved. Violating them is a special kind of shitty.

I hope that this won’t impact these soldiers efforts to take good-faith prisoners in the future. Even among the shoddy discipline of the Russian army, this sort of bullshit is very rare.

  2. Ah yes the so brainwashed that they’ll torture me I’ll just blow us all up technique sure worked for the Japanese.

  3. An entire army of gutless dickheads. And Putin thinks they might have a chance against the US?

I’d put $500 on Poland to smash Russia.

  4. Prepare for this to be reframed as “ukrainian nazis execute surrendering russian soldier while he has his hands up”

  5. Kinda crazy how he just springs up from laying prone. ~~Don’t think I could do that.~~

Edit: After zooming in I can see where his hands were so it’s not that surprising he could do it. At first I assumed his hands were over his head.

  6. That’s one of the craziest things I’ve seen on here, and I’ve seen a lot of crazy stuff on here. The way he sits up fast and immediately gets obliterated before his grenade explodes

  7. Dumb SOB could have just surrendered and lived to see another day. Props to the drone pilot or whoever recognized it and called them off.

  8. This is truly mysterious to me. You have to be a total ideological fundamentalist to do something like this. 100% committed. Ordinarily I respect people who believe strongly in something, but not if that something is an unequivocal lie.

Madness. I’m glad the AFU were able to smoke out his intentions.

  9. You just know on r/UkrainRussiareport they will be saying the Ukrainian NAZI executed him and that they threw the grenade to make it look like he was trying to kill them. Or that’s it’s actually a Ukrainian and the Russians have been shopped to look like Ukrainians.

  10. Just wanted to point out after a second watch, this is yet another occupier not wearing a helmet- and I’m pretty sure (?) those are sneakers on his feet.

Don’t look like boots to me, at least.

“Second greatest army in the world”.

  11. I wonder what signal the Ukrainians had that got them to back up so quickly. Good communication between them and the UAV pilot?

  12. The turn around time on comms between the drone operator and the infantry has got to be less than a minute. The advantage that gives to troops in the field is insane.

  13. Could have surrendered to have 3 hot meals a day, a shower and be alive on this earth but I guess this was better.
