I guess it is a good idea if you need energy in 20 years and money is no objection…

  2. Of course they do, conservative government & mega projects are an easy way to grift money for their friends

  3. The Italian voters expressed their stance against nuclear power twice, via two referendums. The current government is hiding their true intentions on many policies via propaganda and smoke and mirrors, but it’s absolutely possible that another referendum could be held on nuclear plants, with a similar outcome than the past.

In 2024 Italy still doesn’t have a storage site for nuclear waste from decommissioned plants as well as the byproducts of other civilian nuclear uses like medical; I don’t mean that building hasn’t finished, it hasn’t even started because a final location still cannot be determined. No amount of “sweetening the pill” attempts from the government has convinced any municipality from the chosen areas with the right characteristics to accept the construction.

The right wing government is proposing that Italy will host small modular reactors, built in Italy with unspecified foreign partners and then deployed in Italy; compared to the big nuclear plants of old this will possibly require even more locations to host nuclear reactors, as they are smaller, thus incurring the ires of even more people, municipalities and politicians who are against having nuclear power in their territories. To me this plan seems even more doomed to fail as the old attempts.

  4. Doesn’t Italy have lots of sun, endless coastline and massive amount of geothermal activity in the central mountains?

Why not build up cheaper and more sustainable renewal capacity?
