Russia counterattack but Ukraine is stubbornly staying put which annoy Putin to no end.
Had Putin ordered Russian military to wean itself away from top to bottom command that allow no initiative and allowed formation of western style NCOs to be the foundation of army, Ukraine would be in serious trouble but that did not happen.
All Russia can do is to throw unguided bombs, artillery, missiles, cannon fodders, etc. and hope to wear down Ukraine to pull back.

So was it a tactical retreat to get the Russians to overcommit, so that Ukraine could encircle them and trap them?

i see nobody here actually bothered to look at the latest map updates. the russian counterattack recaptured more than 20% of the land ukraine initially took, regained direct land access to glushkovo, and has reached a stable frontline at the snagost river. russian forces are currently fighting in lyubimovka, and if they manage to fully capture the town it will partially encircle many ukrainian troops around korenevo because they are supplied by only one road passing next to the town. meanwhile very little is known about the ukrainian counter-counterattack other than that the initial assault was repelled but there’s another one currently engaged near veseloye. time will tell whether this is a good gamble.
