Will war come again to Bosnia-Herzegovina? | DW Documentary

Will Bosnia-Herzegovina soon be at war again? Almost three decades after the end of the Bosnian war, the country is a new EU candidate. But the situation here is more fragile than ever. Who will prevail in multi-ethnic but divided Bosnia?

In December 2022, some three million Bosnians received hopeful news: after years of waiting, the small multi-ethnic Balkan state is finally an EU candidate. However, peace in the Western Balkans is more fragile than at any time since the end of the Bosnian War in 1995, which left 100,000 dead and hundreds of thousands displaced.

Might Putin be trying to open a second front in the divided country? Why is Bosnia so central to so many geopolitical desires – both in the West (EU, UK, USA) and in places like Russia, Serbia, China and Turkey? And why is the country still suffering from the complex legacy of the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement?

Interviews with the main players then and now unravel the secessionist aspirations of the Bosnian Serbs, the influence of EU member Croatia on the country and Bosnia’s structures of corruption. Bosnia-Herzegovina is the land of three peoples: Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats. It’s a meeting point of the Muslim, Orthodox, Christian and Jewish worlds. And it’s a place that shows that while it is difficult to end a war, it’s even more difficult to make a lasting peace.

  1. Dayton peace agreement was supposed to be used 5-8 years after the war…we are just stuck with this political and ethical divide…sooner or later it will be war…

  2. DW Documentary, you are not telling the truth about not being Serbian representative on comemorial,Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic was there a few years ago and almost get killed.Your video is poring gasoline on the fire, man do report about your situation in your country.German economy is on verge of collapse…

  3. With importing so many immigrants becouse of Merkel in Future war will be something normal for Europe, we need to figh again and create again our countries based on our ideologies

  4. Is DW trying to explain to us, who lived and survived through the Bosnian civil war, what the actual us are like and what actually happened before, during and after that war, as if we were just having a bad dream? You can sell this rubbish to uninterested and preoccupied working class in the West but not us who have seen it with our own eyes. Worry about your own country's internal affairs guys, and don't think that we're all stupid. This movie is in the least an arrogant, discriminating, biased and politically motivated act of hypocrisy from someone who keeps coming to the Balkans over and over to inflict wars in order to rule, who has NOT fully faced their own sins from the very recent past…!!!

  5. What a bunch of false and misleading information in a serious brand doco…Serbian "minority" in Bosnia??? Where did you read or hear that Serbians were "a minority" in pre-war Bosnia and Herzegovina???

  6. It's always Islam, which starts Ethnic Wars, Ethnic Cleansing, Religious Persecution and Genocides like Armenian Genocide, Assyrian Genocide and Genocide and other Christian Persecution by Islamic Ottoman Turks and other Islamic rulers. It is better for Serbs to have separate state.

  7. Politicians in this part of the world prefer war , it is a much easier task to conduct warfare than maintain peace in this war torn region despite the horrific nature of war had already took a heavy toll on Balkan.

  8. Serbs can't do anything without Russian support,Putin won't risk to ruin good relationship with Muslims countries( Bosniaks are mostly Muslims) be casue of few Serb's nationalists.War only can start with Western support like in 92.

  9. One of my best friends in high school was a bosnian refugee. He grew up in srebrenica, and his dad was killed in the massacre. His mom was one of the nicest women even after all she'd been through. She treated me like her own son.

  10. Hey EU, why don't you stay over there in EU, have any war you want but inside the borders of EU and leave Balkans (or any other non-EU country/region) out of it. While you are at it, feel free to take all that spread hatred and instability with you. Yes, the same ones that you support all these years.
"Autocracy or Democracy" my ass. Stop being such hypocrites, you supported autocrats here and you still do.

  11. Serbs want to wage war again, they are angry at their defeats during the 90s. Particularly they want to attack Kosova, annex half of Bosnia and Herzegovina and turn Montenegro into a serbian puppet state that is eventually annexed aswell.
