TIFF now playing Russian propaganda film again, and Toronto Star falls for the bait, rating it 4/4 stars. 😑😑

I read the review, it’s uncritical horse sh*t. No critical analysis, no problematizing of the narrative, glosses over and pretty much ignores the war crimes and crimes against humanity that Russian soldiers continue to commit, no real accountability of russian aggression, minimizes the ukranian experience, presents a single ukranian woman suffering and delusional who supports russia but this view is not in proper context and doesn’t articulate that her view is not widespread/not supported by most ukranians. The review/film seems not to provide any critical analysis of the long history of russian imperialism, the reviewer uncritically accepts the propaganda narrative, and creates a false equivalence between russian and ukranian suffering. It is insane to create this equivalence of oppressor and oppressed. As tragic as it is that some Russian troops are lied to, they are still participants in an illegal war of aggression, many are still committing the most heinous crimes, and completely sidesteps the impact this war of aggression has had on ukranian civilians.

if the director was pro-ukraine then she would have no problems crossing the trenches and filming ukraine’s point of view as well as the russian’s

They just fucked themselves the supossed prestige the tiff thought they had is gone, as one commenter said, this is like those that supported Hitler. Hopefully, the negative press, but more importantly the outrage online will cause calls to defund them. There lies will result in them losing everything they built as a business.

I stopped reading the Toronto Star long ago because I don’t really enjoy reading fiction all that much.

As a Canadian the fact this got shown at all disgusts me and in no way reflects the views of the vast majority of Canadians. The TIFF has lost any respect it may have had.
