I honestly cannot understand how this is controversial. Mexico is a democracy and are reinforcing that democracy by ensuring their judges are elected by the people. If anything, the US could learn a thing or two from that. I hate that our supreme court jurors are elected by the presidency for a permanent life long term. It’s a ridiculously undemocratic system just ripe for corruption.
edit: For a lot of Mexicans, this criticism from foreign governments comes off as interference with their democracy. To most Mexicans, this move by the federal government is a welcome one, so to see the US, who has historically influenced Mexican politics, be against this comes off as highly suspicious at best.
