Meloni is using Starmer to legitimise her xenophobic, anti-migrant policies and rhetoric. Meanwhile, it’s rather ironic that the British Prime Minister is visiting Italy to “learn” about these strategies, while Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini is on trial, facing a potential six-year prison sentence for kidnapping executing those ‘tactics’. Salvini had blocked a boat carrying 147 migrants for 19 days, preventing it from docking until the health and hygiene conditions onboard completely deteriorated.
Problem is I haven’t actually seen anyone come up with a fair and viable strategy to deal with this situation across Europe. It’s the crazy stuff that makes headlines and never anything actually sensible.
Starter wants to deal with the root causes of migration rather than just deporting anyone who shows up illegally which is fair enough I suppose but surely even he realises the root cause isn’t them arriving in Italy lol
Obviously that’s usually the first foothold a lot of these people get in Europe, but it’s not the root cause. Unless he’s planning to rebuild the countries we destroyed and undo 2 decades of disastrous policy in the middle east he’s not going to remove the “root cause”
