  6. I think Robben, why? In 2012 it got to a point where he was losing his place in the starting XI, after losing to Chelsea, having missed a penalty in the UCL final, and then losing the Pokal to BVB, also missing a penalty, he was even booed by the fans. Many pundits and fans wanted him out of the club and saw him as an “almost” type player, that would take a team to the finals but then didn’t have the gut to win it.

    In 2013 he was Bayern’s best player, despite Neuer and Ribéry getting the European nominations, he assisted Mandzukic in the 1st goal and then scored the 2nd winning goal himself in what is for me the one of the most emotional and epic moments in Bayern’s recent history (I wasn’t alive in the 70s so I’m obviously biased).

    That and the fact he constantly got injured but then came back and gave his 100%, every single time, outside of Bayern, he carried that 2010 and 2014 Netherlands team to the final and semi-finals respectively, especially in 2014 when the team was a bunch of young guys and him, Sneijder and RvP, for me makes him the definition of a “comeback” player, not only once but several times.

    In his last match at the UCL he scored 2 goals and had Grimaldo for breakfast like it was nothing, with Bayern he also scored and with the Netherlands 2 goals as well, so even when he semi-retired (went to Groningen but played very little) he was still performing the best he could.

  13. Are we talking players? Then I would go with Hummels. He went to Dortmund at 19 years and came back stronger at 27

  17. Matthäus anyone? Most people thought he was washed after his torn ACL in Italy. He had some serious health problems with an Achilles tendon rupture and so on, but my god, hell of a player.
