What conflict does to us – Recollections from the Iraq War | Us & Them | DW Documentary

The 2003 war against Iraq was based on a lie. The US claimed that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction. A war of aggression, that the US never was penalized for. How are the people affected by this war faring today?

In March 2003, the Iraqi soldier “Faris” – who does not want to give his real name for fear of Iraqi militias – witnessed US soldiers storm the presidential palace in Baghdad. He wept from exhaustion and grief, feeling that his country was lost.

Amber Asbury was stationed in Baghdad from 2005 to 2006 as a combat medic in the US Army. She thought it was a good idea to rid the country of dictator Saddam Hussein. As she saw it, many Iraqis were initially happy about their new freedom. But the US had no long-term plan for Iraq, she says, and they stayed for too long.

The US sniper Garett L. Reppenhagen was in Iraq from 2004 to 2005. He killed enemy fighters, but innocent people as well. Today, he deeply regrets his involvement in the war launched by the United States. Like many US veterans, he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

The geopolitical effects of this war can still be felt today, and they extend far beyond Iraq. The entire region was destabilized, creating a power vacuum in which terrorist organizations were able to take hold, including Al-Qaeda and the so-called “Islamic State” group. None of the people responsible for starting this war were ever brought to justice.

On 24 February 2022, Russia launched a major offensive against Ukraine. This is also a war of aggression in violation of international law. While the majority of Western states were quick to condemn the Russian aggression, a UN resolution deploring the Russian invasion was more polarized: Large parts of the global South, including China and India, abstained from voting. Taken together, the abstaining states represent the majority of the world’s population.

For some observers, this global polarization has its origins in the war in Iraq. British Labour MP and peace activist Andrew Murray says: “Most obviously, the Ukraine invasion takes place in the world the Iraq invasion made. If a ‘rules-based order’ collapsed, it was in 2003.”

  1. These 4 MIC's are the ruination of America, Americans, and global citizens caught in their web. That's the Military Industrial Complex, Medical Industrial Complex, Media Industrial Complex, and the Malpractice (Lawfare) Industrial Complex. These are all large, greed driven industries with far reaching tentacles, creating constant disasters (man-made OK) to drive their profits with sales of new weaponry and drugs. The average American is a good person, but geographically and culturally extremely ignorant. They give their war-mongering leaders a free pass and rarely question foreign entanglements.

  2. I am amazed to hear DW refer to Russian SMO in Ukraine to have started with lie just US's illegal invasion of Iraq which was a criminal lie by all standards. Unless DW takes its head off the sand, the whole world, our greater part of the world understand why Russia went into Ukraine. We are so good at following and researching historical facts. Kindly do the same or keep fooling yourselves.

  3. How hypocritical for DW to put out this video, isn't this media organization one of the top European MSM loudspeakers that those neocons used, like they are using it now to promote that war in Iraq soon after 911 running up to march 2003 the launching of that war. Matter fact, as they are doing right now promoting this war against Russia in Ukrain to the public? And they wonder why people in the global south despise them look at Iraq in this video they destroyed it and just left it to fend for itself, they even have the gut to go to their crime scene with all the scars of wars still visible and put people on camera to record this idiotic documentary. In the opposite side Russia a country that they called a gaz station, with it's little ressources has the decency and humanity of cleaning up and rebuilding after it's wars hence fostering a climate of forgiveness and friendship with its former enemies just like we are seeing former Chechens insurgents battling along side with Russia because Russia acted right by them, destroyed their country, and helped rebuild it better and now they are friends, they are doing the same thing in Mariupol, that was destroyed but is being rebuild at incredible pace that's how you behave and people will respect you, wonder why people side with Russia? It's because of their deeds that people can sense that they aren't fake and vile their actions speak louder than their words.

  4. DW try to put all the blame on Bush but 42 white countries supported him and his decision. They send troops to help Bush just like they do now in Ukraine.

They literally destroyed their own economy just to push the war in Ukraine

  5. US has lost all credibility. The moral double standards, lack of accountability, disregard of human rights and freedom besides their own interests have set in motion what see in Gaza and Ukraine.

  6. My sympathy to the innocent civilians who died during that attack from US terror army. I have zero sympathy for those US veterans suffering of ptsd or depression, you shouldn't have invaded iraq in the first place. You should learn not to obey corrupt politicians.

  7. Why dw documemtary deleted a great documentary about iran titled as "iran from the above"???it was the only positive documentary about iranian people, and they got rid of it.

  8. Which result in Iraq and Afghanistan people not accept western values as own. It's, seems how failure unfortunatly. JUST NENew Christian campaign without results, but with many victims of WAR.Now in Europe war and Nato doing nothing for stop that genocide. If NATO can't deal with such problems after WW2 in Europe. FAILURE IN OTHER PART OF EARTH IT'S, NATURALLY WHEN SUCH HAPPENS I SKY OF Nato and on border of Nato but Nato searching justify not deal with war in Europe.

  9. One of my acquintances, young American ex-soldier having fought and injured in the Iraqi war died from the substance abuse. He told that he couldn't cope witnessing the death of fellow soldiers blown up by a bomb under his eyes. His father and grandfather also served the country with pride and patriotism. Many national leaders have a totally different idea and plot about protecting the own country and invading others. All hypocritical and criminal.

  10. Why don't the countries ruined and victimised sue the invader and the leaders to be tried for justice? Many American leaders are spared from the mass murders called war for denicracy. Not right.

  11. Why do the West think hat they need to bring Democracy to Iraq when as a western political idea Democracy has Failed whereas the old Arabic Caliphate worked before Western Interference usurped it.

  12. These documentaries always want you to feel sorry for these evil killers and their nonsense stories about being deceived to kill innocent children.

  13. As much as there is so much to love about America, the superheroes movies, the Law & Justice and the great scientists and inventors. Yet 10yrs after the invasion, no one is held accountable and no compensation is made to Iraq.

  14. “Not only will America go to your country and kill all your people, but what’s worse I think, is that they’ll come back 20 years later and make a movie about how killing your people made their soldiers feel sad." -Frankie Boyle

  15. After the world war2 the only country has more war or funding war is the US we have the vietnam iraq afghanistan or give weapon libyan syrian popullation to their goverment or war like ukraine and isreal US weapon has kill more innocent people and children just the war in iraq more than 1million has been kill in vietnam till now innocent people are still suffering because of agent orang
And the world knw the US weapon export is one of their biggest ecomony

  16. That is not a lie about russia invading ukraine. The ukraines were killing thousands of ethnic russians and NATO was expanding to their territory. Iraq war is completely different.

  17. I am still highly skeptical to Bush. Partly because of this invasion, as well as being a republican in cahoots with the devil/Putin 😏 Even though just a few NATO countries (Denmark, Netherlands, Poland, and Great Britain) went there, i still feel like many considers the rest of us to be guilty by association, due to being in an alliance with those nations. Bush not only gave NATO a bad reputation, but also distracted the world when Putin commited warcrimes in Chechnya, and gave Putin the ability to pull the "double moral" card when Putin does whatever he wants 😐

  18. "Stay away from the region, leave its people alone to live in peace."
That Iraqi forgets the words of the Messanger, peace be unto him, in Al-Isra 58.
