  1. I adore that people who consume twice the suggested amount of food are eligible to receive the nicest shade of deep green.

  2. Why does the Heart Association get to recommend sugar at all? 6-9 suggests that there is a beneficial amount of added sugar. It should be <9.

  3. I love how people believe these maps. Idk about you, but I’ve never been sampled or polled on my dietary habits lol.

  4. I hate that this is in teaspoons. Powders shouldn’t be measured volumetrically. I would prefer grams, and processed sugar intake is discussed in grams so it’s difficult to compare. For instance the WHO says processed sugar intake should be kept under 50g per day. I cannot easily compare this chart to that recommendation

  5. I’m shocked that Utah isn’t at the top considering how popular soda shops and cookies are around here.

  6. Hawaii having the highest life expectancy while eating all the sweets. What’s going on over there, is it the pineapples or the pog juice?

  7. The map and data is cool!

I don’t know if you are looking for advice to improve, but if you care to update it, I’d recommend making it color blind friendly. Adjusting the colors intensity to properly fit the scale could be an easy way (light green to deep red or something, instead of having both on deep colors)

Also, all states are way above the recommended value, so if you make the recommended value the “lightest” color in the scale, it’s immediately obvious that even the lightest state is not doing that great

  8. PNW native, we don’t go in for sweets much. Not that we’re all necessarily healthy. When you’re knocking back IPAs at the end of the day, it kinda kills your drive for dessert.

  9. The post is titled “sugar intake”, but the legend is captioned “added sugar intake”.

Which is it, and if “added”, what sugar consumption is or isn’t counted?

Does this get us into weird territory where a spoonful of sugar in coffee is “added”, but drinking a can of Coke doesn’t show up?

  10. Holy shit, 20 tbs of sugar is 240g so 240* 4kkal is almost 1000 kkal in only sugar. How do you survive guys….

Edit: sorry, I misread tsp. But still quite impressive
