Anyone ever eaten on Irving Street?

I always look at these restaurants just off Leicester Square and assume they are dreadful. Full of trapped tourists who don't know better. Has anyone ever actually eaten here?

  1. I have. There was a lovely make your own pizza place a few years ago, but it closed down. And then a Pancake place (?) replaced it and wasn’t as good. I wouldn’t say it was full of tourists either

  2. I’ve eaten in a couple, as I used to study in the library around the corner there. Honestly, they’re actually pretty serviceable. I do know what you mean though, you would expect them to be awful.

  3. You know itโ€™s fully tourist driven by the loud waiters stood on the street with menus trying to usher people in.

Literally 10 minutes walk north and you can find so much better stuff for similar prices.

  4. The right side is all “Italian” tourist traps so bad that Bella Italia on the corner is like a 3 Michelin star restaurant by comparison.

The left side is just hit and miss. Steak & Company isn’t Angus Steakhouse level bad but it is still a mediocre tourist trap. Claude’s is ok, but the menu is a mess clearly aimed at satisfying as broad a range of people (i.e. tourists) as possible from a single kitchen. I haven’t tried Xiong Qi but it looks decent. L’Ulivo is much better than the Italians over the road but it’s like going back in time 20 years and paying double what you should for the food.

  5. Yes, it’s convenient for the theatres and has a similar good/bad ratio to most other streets in London. Xiongqi is excellent for a chain restaurant, Claudes is not bad either. It’s only the pseudo-Italian restaurants that let it down, but you could say that outside the tourist district too.
