  1. Tbh I can’t imagine there only being much less than 80,000 casualties, do you guys think it’s legit? Obviously he will try to downplay the death toll to boost moral

  2. I think the russian high death rate is because of unwillingness to save the wounded. As the attacker, without overwhelming force, they are bound to suffer more casualties than the defenders. 4:1 or 5:1 is completely plausible.

  3. I don’t know if you are quoting the WSJ making this error or if it’s your own, but this is using “casaulties” wrong and in two different ways in the same paragraph:
“The initial report, published on September 17, estimated that combined Ukrainian and Russian **casualties** have reached around one million, with the Journal stating that 80,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed and 400,000 injured, while Russian **casualties** are said to be about 200,000.”

I’m assuming the 2nd one is meant to be “deaths” here, otherwise the casaulties don’t come anywhere near the “around one million.” It’s also a weird choice to only show Russian deaths, assuming that’s what was meant, while showing Ukrinian killed + injured numbers which makes it appear Ukraine has taken more losses unless the reader takes the time to do some mental math to compare the figures to the alluded to near one million total – the average reader will skim this and conclude that Russia has taken less than half the losses Ukraine has.
