  1. Much as I hate using the US map to depict state-level data, shading states by decade of last execution might help absorbing 50 pieces of information.

  2. I’ll add that this is referring to state level executions. Federal or military executions are not counted.

  3. Idaho attempted one in 2024. It just didn’t work, and the individual did not die.

Edit: I didn’t think this would blow up. But I would really like to clarify something. The inmate who was attempted to be executed was unsuccessfully executed. This is because the medical providers were unable to get an IV line established. Instead of proceeding with the execution with the risk of botching and causing unneeded pain and suffering, they called it off to be safe.

Edit 2: for people questioning if they will try again. This is unknown. The inmate’s sentence is to death, so therefore, his sentence has not been served. However, this is unprecedented territory for the State of Idaho, so they are checking all boxes before continuing. This also opens a new whole avenue of appeals for the inmate. Idaho’s track record is that they don’t like to execute someone until all appeals have been exhausted. This is to help ensure there isn’t a wrongful execution.

Edit 3: [AP Article](https://apnews.com/article/creech-idaho-botched-execution-lethal-injection-905e6f0a096ed826d8273b9a0fa7001c) that explains the circumstances surrounding this situation.

  4. Michigan’s last *and only* execution as a state was actually in 1838, one year after its admittance to the union in 1837.

  5. What happened in Michigan, Wisconsin, Rhode Island, and Maine that made them stop executing people in the 19th century? That’s a lot earlier than most others that stopped.

  6. So, for practical purposes, only 17 states have active (<14 years since last execution) capital punishment programs. About 1/3 of the Union. Mostly red states.

  7. Hawaii’s last execution would’ve predated its statehood, notably.

Texas and, increasingly, Florida just love executing people. Don’t even have to be guilty, really.

  8. This is super relevant since Marcellus Williams is sentenced for execution TOMORROW, Sept. 24th, 2024 despite DNA evidence that could prove his innocence. There was also lots of issues surrounding the handling of his case – including mishandling of evidence, racial bias in jury selection by removing black jurors, and the list goes on.

Read more about him here: [https://innocenceproject.org/cases/marcellus-williams/](https://innocenceproject.org/cases/marcellus-williams/)

Edit: Missouri Courts are refusing to postpone his execution despite nearly 620,000 signatures on the petition – defense lawyers demanding a halt, the victim’s own family is asking for the execution to not occur, etc. There is a solid case for his innocence. There are serious doubts as to the validity of his prosecution – and as of now, Missouri is still moving forward with the execution tomorrow. How does that make sense?

  9. Other countries that still use the death penalty:

    – Saudi Arabia
    – Yemen
    – Syria
    – Sudan
    – Afghanistan
    – North Korea
    – China
    – Egypt
    – Belarus
    – Iran
    – Iraq
    – Somalia

    … notice a pattern there?

  10. Is this including states where the crime was committed in that state, the physical execution happened there, but it circumvented state law by it being handled by the US Attorneys office in federal court?

I’ve heard they’ve been doing that to get executions in blue states.

  11. I’ve heard this argument before so I’d like to see someone else’s opinions.

What would you say if everyone stopped the death penalty except for child sex offenders?

  12. Isn’t it curious that most of the states with the most current executions are also the states with no exception anti-abortion laws. I guess their compassion only goes so far.

  13. The fact that any of these say 2024 is a tragedy. The government has absolutely executed innocent people before and that should keep us all up at night.
