Why do women who commit criminal offences deserving of prison sentences belong in prison less than men who do the same? I just don’t get it.

What a truly bizarre attempt to deal with the prison overcrowding problem. First the amnesty, now this.
This is absolutely bonkers.
We hear so much about women calling for more equality.
I’m guessing it’s a one way street?
The overcrowding isn’t going to be solved by just changing them to mens prisons.
We need a prison service fit for function and that requires investing in several thousand more places which is going to cost billions because reasons.
I hope we do actually expand the prison capacity at some stage instead of doing an indefinite early release for non-violent offenders, because this is kinda sending the impression that “If a violent crime isn’t committed, prison isn’t necessary” which from a purely punishing standpoint? It often isn’t.
But from the standpoint of reoffending individuals who’ve clearly grown up in instability, lack skills that help them thrive in society and are behind academically also? This is where prisons could help them.. I’ve known people who will just be in and out of prison on short sentences continuously where they would have had the opportunity to do courses, undergo counselling, personality disorder assessments/learning disability assessments (faster waiting time than outside of prison, funnily enough), etc.
But because they’re given very short sentences that don’t even exceed a year, they aren’t really able to take advantage of any of these things, so recidivism remains a huge risk. I have an older sister who has a history of abusing drugs, alcohol, massive amounts of anti-social behaviour and has been to prison multiple times yet let out early. Nothing has changed.
I genuinely think if she was at least kept there for a year or more, she’d genuinely have a better chance living a normal life rather than falling into the same patterns.

Completely insane and I cannot understand how it would be legal to treat men in a blatantly discriminatory unfavourable way. As far as I’m aware UK Equalities law stresses moral symmetry of different groups rather than ‘rectifying injustice’ and it’s race/gender that are protected characteristics rather than e.g. black/women being protected groups. It’s illegal to unfairly discriminate against men, white people, straight people and so on.

Labour will consider this and go on about prison capacity, but never raise decriminalising certain drugs when drug offenders make up about 10% of the total prison population.

The current ‘justice’ system distanced itself from the notion of rehabilitation a long time ago. Prisons are overcrowded to the point of being called inhumane on many HM inspection reports (read inside times for up to date prison inspections). Many cat C prisons still run on COVID regimes (effectively running 22 hours in cell. Hugely understaffed and very financially mismanaged. There are no longer many provisions for skills training (outside of functional maths/English). An increasingly aged population who need a lot more palliative care that the current system are Ill equipped to cater for. Instances of acute mental health issues and suicide rates (11 suicides in 1 prison alone in less than a 2yr period). All this creates a melting pot that the current and previous government fail to compare unless they themselves look at huge reformation of not only HMPs but the CPS (this is where the heart of the situation lies I feel). Many in custody are incredibly skilled but the way the state is right now, they are prevented from using those skills to help the rehabilitation of their fellow inmates. Quite a few peer led programs that actually were working to improve thought processes (THREADS being a great example) are being defunded and pulled.
But hey, let’s not worry about that, we’ll just complain that they sit around all day and play video games and they deserve to be there (many do, but many should never have been incarcerated but instead needed significant psychological intervention).

I work in this sector and I can promise you there are women who I have dealt with that have done terrible things and need to be in prison just as there are men .

These people do not live in the real world. In my opinion more of them should be going to prison. It is there to rehabilitate and punish. That’s the point. You lose your right to liberty if you fail to live up to your responsibilities in a civil society.
These are not normal people. This is not mrs miggins who’s fallen on hard times. These people are horrible (I see them every day) and will never be anything more than a drain of society. I can think of many a British citizen who we could have sent to Rwanda rather than some poor asylum seeker!
While many of them maybe victims of abuse or other hardships in life, that does not give you free reign to do as you please without consequence.
While there absolutely needs to be much more money put into the CJ system, to help support and rehabilitate, I am fed up with people not taking responsibility for their piss poor decisions in life.
