  1. the store has a guaranteed buy order, 10 people in the middle and a decent markup.

    The turkish guy has 3 guys between him and the veg market and he got them for cheap because there was an overproduction/underdemand, and his hourly salary sucks but he works 70h so it’s overall decent

  2. Don’t know what to think of it, but on the back of our Turkish shop, I’ve seen their pumpkins being delivered: they all had a rewe sticker on them. Why? Don’t know. I still buy there ab und zu, but this made me wonder…..

  3. There is still the possibility that the Turkish shop will write them on the books as sold for 3EUR and makes up the difference in the account with money from “other family business endeavours”. Not saying it is the case, but it is a possibility.

  4. You can often buy 100 really cheap kiwis. You can rarely buy a million. Rewe needs millions, the turkish guy needs hundreds.

  6. A lot of Turkish supermarkets cooperate to bring prices down. They also often don’t have fixed contracts and can buy the cheapest products instead of being bound to buy from the same supplier at the same price until a new contract is negotiated

  7. Rewe can charge €3 because people will pay €3. You’re not just paying for the fruit, you’re paying for the chance to shop in a nice, big, air-conditioned supermarket with wide aisles, a big selection of big-name brands, and magically free of all the riff-raff you get at Netto.

    The Turkish shop chooses not to charge such an obscenely huge markup. It’s probably a small family-run business that doesn’t employ a lot of staff, and probably caters for people who are just trying to feed their families and don’t have the luxury of caring what other people think.

  8. B-goods or that have been stored for a long time.

    I have often found that vegetables or fruit from Turkish shops quickly start to go mouldy.

  9. Rewe has a giant burocratic overhead who needs to be financed and is also a franchise, meaning the franchisee wants his cut also.

    In private supermarkets the profit is the salary of the owner.

    Oh and also 99% of them don’t pay their taxes right lol.
    You getting a receipt everytime you are there?

  10. Or Rewe is too greedy? In a lot of countries you buy kiwis not by ‘piece/stuck’ but by the kilo.

  11. Another aspect could be turn over. 

    If rewe has this as for product and sells one box a week or  maybe some spoil. It will cost more than if a market sells 1 a day. 

    There could be more reasons. Price calculations can be wired sometimes
