  1. Absolutely class, I was watching it recently with my son and had to turn it off when he goes back to London. Absolutely devastating scenes.

  2. For those who didn’t know.

Goodnight Mister Tom (1998), based on the novel of the same name by Michelle Magorian.

  3. This, The Secret Garden and A Little Princess are my favourite childhood movies. I cry like a baby at all of them.

Apparently I didn’t like to be happy as a kid 😅

  4. Remember reading the book then watching the movie in primary school

  5. My phones so small I thought it was a Fools and Horses feature.

  6. Love this film. Hate the mum tho and the baby part is so sad.

  7. Just thinking about the belt scenes make me cringe and sad.

  8. A few years ago on December 23rd I found that I couldn’t sleep, so I ended up doing a British TV drama binge while getting progressively drunker on homemade gin and tonic.

It was this, the Martin Clunes version of Goodbye Mr Chips, and some episodes of an old CBBC drama from the mid 90s that I found on YouTube.

I’m not sure if the hangover the next day (when I was meant to be working remotely…) was entirely down to the alcohol or a mix of that and some nostalgic ugly crying.

  9. Don’t think I’ve seen Goodnight Mr Tom since my school days. Might have to give it another watch.

  10. My daughter has just started reading this book for school.

  11. Take a perfectly good Tuesday night and just ruin it, why don’t you 🙃

  12. Is this the movie with the mum who mistreats the kid and he is saved?

  13. We read the book for English in year 7 and a lot, probably most, of us openly sobbed at the Trudy bit. I’d probably appreciate the telly version more if it hadn’t missed so much out.

  14. I watched this on TV a couple of weeks ago, mid Saturday or Sunday afternoon, what a cracking watch.

  15. I remember seeing this film in school sometime probably 17ish years ago.

I got so engrossed in the film that I started clapping when they all applauding for the birthday bit which then got the rest of my classroom clapping.

I was so embarrassed at the time and even more relieved when everyone else was too confused about why they were clapping and it wasn’t traced back to me, the outcasted, stupidly tall autistic girl :’D

Regardless I’m so happy to see this! Now I can write the name of this film down so I can introduce this brilliant film to my partner! So, thank you!

  16. Claude Greengrass…What a legend he was!…Wonder what he’s up to these days?

  17. *Back Home*, *Cuckoo in the Nest* and it’s follow up *A Spoonful of Jam* are all similarly themed stories from the same author and also quite good. I read all four of these books multiple times as a youngster.

  18. Why did my brain go time bandits? I can’t even remember what it looks like

  19. Best bit was when we found out Slugworth worked for Willy Wonka. The glass elevator made a mess though.
