On 28 March, former [Olympic](https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/olympics) athlete Meaggan Pettipiece’s life was turned upside down after scanning her ham and asparagus at a Walmart self-checkout machine in Indiana. After security saw she failed to scan the items — worth $67 — they called the police, even though she paid $176 for the other groceries.
During her [arrest](https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/arrest), she told officers that she wasn’t aware the machine hadn’t registered the items, but they continued with the arrest anyway. When officers searched her purse, they found three disposable vapes as well as two unopened blister packs containing the anti-nausea medication Zofran, leading them to not only to charge her for theft over the unscanned items but also for possession of marijuana and a controlled substance.
Ondansetron isn’t a controlled substance?! Like, it’s prescription but it doesn’t fall under the controlled substance act and you don’t have to carry it in a prescription container? Like what the fuck?
Just an FYI, unless a cop is already there, you do NOT have to stop for any walmart employee for any reason. They can’t force you and can’t block you in. You’re not obliged to let them check your receipt (please note at Sam’s club it’s part of the contract you sign to have a membership to let them check receipts). If you know you didn’t do anything wrong and they’re trying to bully you into staying just keep walking and go home.
You don’t just “forget” to scan $67 worth of items. This seems like it could be a justified arrest.
Fucking Walmart. Hire some cashiers.
Amateur hour
You take 1 thing off if you buy ten of the same things or you forget a piece of fruit or something. $67 dollars is too much to pay youraelf for working the checkout line.
Even Olympians struggle with self-checkout, lol!
But if you followed the story SHE WAS CLEARED OF ALL CHARGES!! After review of the video
Why are we defending her for not scanning her food and carrying drugs? The blister pack was unopened with no prescription.
Just NA things. Its too ez to just let her pay the difference and move on.

An Olympian was arrested after a debacle at a [Walmart](https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/walmart) self-checkout station.
