>Now though, over two months’ after the incident, the UEFA Referees’ Committee has conceded that a penalty should have been given.
>In a statement on Monday, they said: “Following the latest UEFA guidelines, hand-to-ball contact that stops a shot on goal should be punished more strictly, and in most cases a penalty kick should be awarded, unless the defender’s arm is very close to the body or in contact with the body.
>“In this case [Cucurella], the defender stops the shot on goal with his arm, which is not very close to the body, making himself bigger, so a penalty kick should have been awarded.”
Edit: the title of this post is the headline of the article, not the words I would’ve used for one so please don’t come at me for that.
And nothing will come out of this, referees will not be punished, match won’t be replayed and etc…
The referee also didn’t show a red card to Kroos, after he deserved it several times. Not so sure this possible goal would’ve given them the victory all things considered.
Didn’t see any video in article but maybe I missed it because I’m on mobile. Here’s a video https://youtu.be/JEDOC_97Heo?si=joHt4M9gSnrMnceZ
Next point is they’re going to admit that you cannot award a penalty when you’re brought out of balance **after** you kick the ball (yes I’m looking at you Harry Kane).
Stupid headline.
The article doesn’t have a video but if I remember correctly it was off side before the kick? Does some one have the video of the full situation.
These things happen.
In Brazil, Neuer should have been sent off with a red card, which would have likely meant a loss.
Didn’t happen. Move on.
Germany could have missed the pen.
Oh, how nice of them.
Referees were criminal during the whole tournament.
La mano de Dios 2.0
And Kroos should have been kick out of that game multiple times.
The main reason I stopped watching football altogether were decisions like this. I just can’t suffer through this anymore. The tipping point for me was a Real Madrid match when they were basically gifted the victory. It’s been about 10 years now and while I do miss it sometimes, I’d rather keep my sanity.
The solution is to replay the whole match again. Easy.
After months of crying
UEFA: “Yes yes whatever”
Spain was still better team in this match
Repeat the final match with Germany
So the title ain’t worth sh*t?
Panem et circenses…
I remember weeks of discussions to justify the non-call. This is a circus!
If only we had a technology that allowed us to look at key moments and reevaluate them… Taylor should never be allowed to referee again
No shit. Everyone saw it back then during live play. How are we better referees than whatever you throw onto the pitch?
A llorar guiris.
Not sure if it cost the euro title but that British asshole referee including his boss needs to be suspended from the game forever
I remember watching it at the time and thinking how on earth a penalty couldn’t have been given. I suppose the only mitigating factor was that he was trying to bring his arm behind his back at the time. But his arm blocked a shot so a penalty should have been given.
I don’t think it would deserve a card because it wasn’t intentional but should have been punished.
However if we are grumbling about historical games then Maradona should have been sent off in ’86 for intentionally handling the ball into the net.
Phahahha.
I was arguing with sooo manny people in r/Euro2024 or what was it.
So manny people were upset that people were talking about this 2 days after the match.
“GeRManS ArE SoRe LooSers”
I tried explaining to them that this is such a historic contraversial big situation that could easily be avoided by looking at VAR by the ref that people will remember it for years and talk about it.
They said to me shit like “noo you are a sore looser no one will rember this apart for the Germans.”
Mhm yeah right..
Like the thing is. It was offside or something anyways right? But if the referee was smart enough he would have sensed the contraversial situation that this is and hewould have looked at var to calm everyone down. Because now you have like 60% of the population that dosen’t know it was an offside or wharever it was I forgot. All he had to do is look at the VAR and be like “aha yeah it was a handball but it was also this before it so.. “
Why is everyone acting like it’s the first time a wrong decision had a major influence on an international tournament?
Is this the first tournament you guys watched?
My interest in soccer is basically limited to watching about 2 games every 2 years when there is a European or World Championship, but even so I heard about this controversy.
I suppose that there really is something like a “referee culture” in soccer, where many referees are looking for ways to argue why they should be relevant “because that’s the only way that soccer is real soccer”, rather than how to actually improve the game overall – and technology appears to be at a point where referees should become less important overall.
Did they also admit their mistake of not giving 2 yellows to kroos in the first 15 minutes??
VAR! (Huh! Yeah!)
What is it good for?
At the same time Kroos deserved a red card in the first half. Foul on Pedri and just a couple of minutes later he fouled Yamal. They can be mad about the handball but at the same time they can’t say that the ref didn’t cut them some slack.
im spanish,repeat the match.
In the name of all German tax payers I demand indemnity from the UEFA. We sponsored that party.
So it took them two months to see what the whole world saw during the match. Bloody donkeys.
English refs are totally shit
Almost every week it feels like we get fucked over by them at r/nffc
They should be banned from international and European officiating.
The fact that they are not admitting the procedural mishandling is astonishing to me. If you read this, you could think that the only problem was that they didn’t award the penalty, but it’s even worse as Taylor flat out refused to even review the play!
So the fun thing is that VAR should theoretically make things like this impossible
However, that’s only if we let VAR actually do its job. Right now the “it’s only allowed to correct obvious mistakes” rule is hindering it massively
I still think that this wasn’t a penalty. His hands were down, he couldn’t possibly react in time and the still is misleading as he was moving quickly to his right.
Downvote me.
I’m not a soccer fan, but I’m german so I couldn’t avoid it lmao.
I watched the match and even I, someone who knows about as much about football as I know about quantum physics (Honestly I probably l know more about quantum physics than football, which still isn’t much), felt like they should’ve gotten a penalty.
Shame on them
And I made a colossal mistake too, opening this thread, because I don’t give a flying fuck.
To be absolutelly correct,it cost them semifinales
The most probable answer to the whole topic is „corruption“. Football is more about money than most other sports.
I don’t know whats worse. The decision itself or them admitting it was a mistake.
I’ll save this for the next time my family complaints about VAR.
Now do World Cup Final 2018
Shocker that it was PL refs that made this blunder….
Poor Germans,
First Munchen gets eliminated because of a stupid ref
Then this.
I hate that they are only doing this so that other countries or even germany cant complain if their players get into a similar situation. Would be funny if blocking a ball, going towards the goal, with your hand would be fair play as long as its below the waist and of course an accident.
Go fuck yourself UEFA
You can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtM6MCXUyjk
It’s a clear penalty, not sure what they did at VAR
