In my previous apartment I used to plug my router to the wall through the Ethernet cable. I entered today a new apartment and I noted that only the telephone connection (the one little smaller than Ethernet) is available. I already activated the internet connection through TELIA (50 mbs is included in the building) but I don’t know how to use it now… anyone can help? What should I or do to solve this?

  1. Put the router on the box on the right, just get the right cable. The one that says TV goes to tv and other to router

  2. I had this same problem. My apartment was supposed to come with free wifi, but whoever did the renovations on it ripped out the three prong socket for it.

I had taken photos of every socket in my apartment and brought them to a DNA shop to show the employee and he told me none of the outlets were for wifi.

Now I have a modem that takes a 4G SIM card and pay DNA 16€/month for 200 mb/s wifi.

  3. Is there a modem in the apartment? It would plug into the coaxial TV output. If there isn’t a modem supplied with the apartment. Then you need to purchase “kaapelimodeemi”

  4. Hi usually you can connect to the phone line but you need a DSL modem. Not an expert here but I think the phone connection is a DSL port so get a DSL modem which has a connection to that port and voila use the internet.

  5. Maybe this port isn’t connected. Check the cabinet which normally is by the entrance of your flat if you have Ethernet connectors in there and connect directly there to see if it works. Sometimes you need to connect the incoming port to the port in your wall using a short Ethernet cable in those cabinets.

  6. My apartment has two options for internet: through the phone cable or through tv cable. Both need their own special modem which you can get from the provider. You probably have both or one of them. If you want to increase the speed check which one is better (my phone cable max is 100mbs and tv cable goes up to 1000mbs) edit; what kind of modem do you have? Also what does the contract with Telia say about the modem specifications?

  7. You should ask the property manager (isännöitsijä) or the internet provider about it. Most likely, if you’re living in a flat, the internet comes to the building via fiber, but the connection from the basement to the apartment depends on the building. Newer buildings have ethernet, older ones might have the connection through old phone cables (three prong plug or rj11 connector) or the antenna vable (coaxial).

If your building uses the phone lines, you need a VDSL modem. These can be bought for fairly cheap even as new. If your building uses the antenna plug, you need a cable modem (kaapelimodeemi). These are a bit more expensive but usually you can buy a reasonably priced one second hand.

  8. Check out the breaker box (electric box) of your apartment. There should be the main DSL Port. Which where you gonna plugin your OWN wifi router/modem.

Other option is that your internet is supplied with the television antenna cable, the round outlets next to your telephone outlets. There are specific routers for that.

  9. Ask your landlord/housing management/neighbour.

As other have said, it’s most likely tv/coax cable connection and you need a cable modem from the ISP, or a compatible second hand device. Once you verify the connection you can check the supported devices from the ISP.

  10. Our ethernet connector was in our electrical box two times. Our current place had to have the ethernet installed professionally into the wall. It only had the option for the three pronged connector. Just call the housing company and they can send someone

  11. Maybe Telia could help you better. It could be on the cable but it is pure speculation as you do not give enough data.

  12. As others have mentioned, some times the modem can be in your eltrical cabinet.

If that is the case, usually only one of the sockets are live. From there you route a cable from that socket to the other sockets in the eltrical cabinet.

You can also use your router in between them.
Some cabinets have labels so you know which socket goes where, other will mention the name of the room.

After this you can then run a cable from the socket you showed and it should work.

  13. At least my apartment has 2,5G connection via the coax (those circles in the rightmost square module)

  14. If there isnt a modem already, Ask your ISP, they should be the ones providing a modem, most likely its gonna be an antenna based as phone lines are phasing out..

You should never plugin your pc directly to the network without a device inbetween regardless.. check the power box for connections

  15. I cannot modify the post so I write it here.
There is nothing in the electricity cabinet, so Ethernet is not there. I tried to call the housing company several times but no answer 🥲. I think only chance is to understand something through a Telia store…

  16. If no ethernet is wired you can buy a docsis router which works via the cable network. I have one in my current apartment and it works great with my gigabit connection so you are not giving up speed going that route

  17. That plug marked with phone is probably RJ11.
And you need to plug that to the router you get you get from Telia.

  18. In Koivukylä, the tall rental buildings have internet via tv cable. As the operator, they know if its cable or via phoneline. If you get wrong type of modem, it is useless to you.

Most likely you need cable modem.
I found one relatively new second hand, still in box from tori.fi for maybe 30e. Price of similar new was about 200e. Filter the search from area that you are able to pick up.

It is adviced to not use too old modem, and atleast update their firmware for security reasons.
