Our local magazine has a kids puzzle page, and being two 28 year old children we've decided to have a go at the crossword. We managed everything, except for 3 down. After giving up and using a crossword solver, Amanita was the only thing that fit with the letters we had and the clue. Just to reiterate, this is for children.

Are we thick for not even knowing that word at 28!?

  1. It’s a perfectly cromulent word.

    What was the clue?

  2. What was the clue out of curiosity?

Edit: Oh, got it, the mushroom picture. Well, I was outsmarted by a kid’s puzzle.

  3. Q – Why did the Amanita go to the party?

    A – Because he was a fungi!

Q – Why did he leave?

    A – There wasn’t mushroom!

  4. I was genuinely obsessed with amanitas as a child but I admit I might be an exception

  5. One that’s spent a lot of time levelling their Alchemy skill in Oblivion and Skyrim, duh.

  6. One who always hears people calling their mum ‘A man eater’ but has never seen it written down, so just goes by what it sounds like?

  7. They look like squishmallows, so if there’s one called that, if your child is anything like mine, it’ll be the first thing she thought of.

  8. I dunno, as a kid, I loved doing puzzles like this, and then getting all the encyclopedias out of my dad’s bookcase and trying to figure out the clue until I found the right word…. then was obsessed with the words for a week. So if I was that kid, it wouldn’t be in my vocabulary until I did the puzzle and learnt it.

I was a dull child though…. and am also a dull adult.

  9. You’re not thick, I’m also 28 and didn’t know the word

  10. As a kid growing up in the countryside of Brittany, “amanite” vas a known word to me.

  11. Sort of whippersnapper that plays a lot of Rimworld.

  12. I’m more bothered by the use of “candy corn” in a British publication. That’s not a thing here.

  13. Well, actually, if they are as mario obsessed as some children…

    [Amanita](https://mario.fandom.com/wiki/Amanita)

I had a three year old keep saying ‘La-ke-tu’ playing Mario Kart and thought it was just a word they weren’t pronouncing properly. Then I looked it up… [Lakitu](https://mario.fandom.com/wiki/Lakitu).

Having played Mario in my youth a lot, I never bothered with the names of all the characters. It seems like nowadays you have to know even at three.

  14. I did. I was a morbid kid and liked reading about poisons.

  15. Candy / candy corn? Very American. Maybe they have more amanitas over there

  16. I assumed it was going to be part of its official Squishmallow name, but Google suggests he’s actually called Malcolm the Mushroom.

  17. I’m 43 and just had to Google! I thought my vocab was pretty good. My grammar and punctuation not anymore!
What’s that got to do with Halloween?

  18. At the young age of 3.048883446×10^29 and you don’t know amanita? Nope, nothing to be ashamed of

  19. I did. I was always into nature books and identifying plants and animals as a kid.

  20. I did when I was a child. A kid who’s interested in science and the natural world?
