In general, I don’t think public transport should be run for profit – it’s a public service. It will likely always have an operating deficit, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But the benefits need to be considered outside of revenue. Things like economic growth, better connectivity, better access, environmental considerations, etc.
Cheaper fares and more consistent services would go a long way. The decision to reimpose peak fares is the wrong one, and I very much hope they reconsider.
It might be because all the people who politically care about public transport are out cycling instead of getting tickets.
Maybe there should be a bike amnesty where you can hand your bike into Scotrail for a bus/trainpass and they can recycle the cycles into wee cubes.

Scotrail is one of the most reliable franchises in the UK.
This is inaccurate. If it’s operated by scotrail, why does the cycle operate with no unexplained delays or replacement buses?
