End of the coal era

Ratcliffe, Notts, closed today. The last coal-fired power station in the UK.

Throughout my life, it's been a significant landmark; here's a few pics (apologies for Grauniad);

XKCD has picked up on it too; apparently, coal mining has lowered the UK by 3". https://xkcd.com/2992

  1. I remember the first time I was on a train that stopped at East Mids Parkway. It was so cool being that close to the cooling tower!

  2. Someone once stated that if we as a race (Human) do not sort our shit out and end up devolving back into the medieval sort of age that we wouldn’t be able to have another industrial revolution.

    Well if all we dug up was 3 inches.. we have one or two more.

    As a note, please no devolving. I like this clean air and I’m old enough to remember unclean air.

  3. It’s a landmark for sure but I don’t mourn its demise, it feels like it’s been a blot on the landscape of the East Midlands for decades.

    I hope the land will be used well after the demolition

  4. Definitely mixed emotions. Coal was such an important part of many local industries in this country and dictated how the communities evolved.

    But we can hopefully look to the future through all the pain and forge a more breathable future for all of us, even the most disadvantaged members of our society.

  5. The BBC’s home affairs editor Mark Easton did a brilliant and moving obituary to it on Monday’s 18:00 news on Radio 4. I recommend listening back to it!
