  1. He might be a hero over there now, they can certainly use a working bus…

  2. was it too expensive to fly to China then take the train in? did he hope to evade North Korean authorities and just pretend to be someone else? or just a complete mental break?

  3. If he had succeeded and he didn’t already strike a deal to be used for PR he might be fucked, but it’s also something I can see North Korea setting up intentionally, again for propaganda.

  4. Seems like something NK would set up to portray them in a positive light lmao

  5. Odd thing to steal. Unless the north needed a bus lol.

  6. People of all kinds have real trouble adjusting when cut off from their support structures. It doesn’t matter if it’s your family, your culture, your language, or something more material like your home and your job, and it also doesn’t matter if all that stuff came with grinding poverty or literal imprisonment. Pretty similar to institutionalization in prisons here in the states, but worse because it’s all you’ve known your entire life.

  7. Well, the defector found out life in the south was not panacea as he thought. Still, I would have thought he’d at least gained weight because there is more food in the south.

  8. The article won’t load and I am super bummed. I am trying to fathom how someone could think North Korea is better…

  9. They will sing his praises after they execute him.

  10. Probably a spy from the North, he had just completed his mission or something.

  11. I remember watching a video on a guy that escaped North Korea and ended up studying at a university in South Korea.

The stress from studying and trying to keep up with everyone else nearly drove him to suicide, which to me is wild considering the horrific shit he had to deal with in North Korea.

Edit: found the video, it’s split into parts. [Here’s part 1](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyqUw0WYwoc) and [Part 2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhmzpMP3bEE) is where he speaks about how he contemplated suicide because he didn’t think he could compete with South Koreans (at 14:24). (In part 1 a woman talks about an execution she witnessed and it gets a bit graphic just fyi)

  12. South koreans are pretty hostile/discriminatory to NK defectors. It was probably pretty stressful for him there.

  13. They should investigate if he was a spy who was about to get exposed.

  14. Can’t imagine that things will be great when he returns.

  15. Good luck to him. I hope he doesn’t get executed for defecting in the first place.

  16. Pretty sure Koreans who move to the states feel the same way. Ain’t nobody want to live in a dystopia like South Korea

  17. Tourism will be lit when they open their borders in December.

  18. South Korea is dystopian. High suicide rate. Low birth rate. Chaebols control the nation. It’s like watching an episode of black mirror. No wonder the media coming out of SK is so violent and disturbing.

  19. This sounds like the plot of a 90’s Farrelly Brothers comedy.

  20. North Korea: you’ll work all day have nothing and you’ll like it!!

South Korea: you’ll work all day , barely get by and be mocked and shamed by anyone doing better.
