Discussion Thread: 2024 Vice Presidential Debate Between Senator J.D. Vance and Governor Tim Walz

Tonight, starting at 9 p.m. Eastern, Ohio senator J.D. Vance (Republican) and Minnesota governor Tim Walz (Democratic) will participate in a debate hosted by CBS News. Per CBS' 'What to Know' page, the debate will run for 90 minutes, will not have an audience, and will not feature opening statements. Also per that page: "Candidates, who cannot bring pre-written notes or props on stage, will have two minutes to answer a question and two minutes to respond. They will be allowed one minute for rebuttals. At moderators' discretion, candidates may get an additional minute to continue a discussion." CBS "reserves the right" to turn off a given candidates' microphone, but mics will not be muted by default while a candidate's opponent is speaking.

  1. What happens during the handshake before the debate? No handshake?

Does someone cross over the middle of the stage to handshake like Kamala did to Trump?

  2. The conundrum of JD Vance

    – He would be more convincing and relatable if he had principles
    – However if he had principles he wouldn’t be a Trump supporter

  3. Tim Walz encountered juvenile “I think I’m smarter than you” kids as a high school teacher all the time.

    He’ll be fine tonight

  4. This debate will be so free if Walz can capitalize off of a blunder and tie it to the fact that Vance is already extremely unpopular and would be the next president after Trump is too old

  5. What I really want Walz to do, when Vance starts yapping over top of him during an answer (which we all know he’ll do), is just stop and look over at Vance and say “You need to shut up when someone’s talking. In Minnesota we call that ‘manners’. Did you learn manners at Yale, Senator? Well you need to use them.”

  6. not Steve Kornacki doing serious multi-page statistics presentation on how much people hate JD Vance lmao

  7. What are we sipping on and/or munching on for this evening’s ~~discussion of public policy~~ debate?

  8. Learn Irish why you wait

English : Why is that weird person wearing eye liner?

Irish : Cén fáth a bhfuil an duine aisteach sin ag caitheamh línéar súl?

  9. Remember back when not being able to spell “potato” was disqualifying from office?

    Now-a-days being a potato isn’t even disqualifying

  10. What do we think the odds are that Vance beelines to Walz’s podium trying to corner him for a handshake solely because it worked for Kamala? Does Walz counter by going to stage center and pulling a ‘what are you doing over there?’

  11. Walz is, by his own admission, not the strongest debater. Vance is also not a 68-year-old in the early stages of dementia. This will probably be much closer than the presidential debate.

  12. i was gonna say i’m excited to see vance make a fucking fool out of himself, but then again it doesn’t even matter, he’ll get around half the vote anyway

  13. I hope the topic of Healthcare comes up and Walz says something to the effect of, “the average lifespan of an American is about 78yrs, roughly 75for men,80 for women. I want all of us to live that long, but half of us don’t”.

Kind of a subtle way of mentioning Trump’s age issue.

  14. 1 more hour or so!

“It will run 90 minutes — the same length as the two presidential debates — and end at 10:30 p.m. ET. (7:30 p.m. PT etc.)”

  15. Other question I’m looking forward to: “Today is President Jimmy Carter’s 100th birthday, the first American President to live to 100. Please explain how your policy stances are similar to and different from President Carter’s.

Walz: Eloquent and authentic response about relating to every day Americans and working in his community.

Vance: Thrashing about coastal liberal elites, without demonstrating any evidence of knowing who Jimmy Carter is or the hallmarks of his Presidency.

  16. Vance also said that he didn’t really feel as though he would need to prepare. Sound familiar?

  17. JV Vance campaign staff has already announced he plans on appearing on camera in the spin room after the debate. Can’t have Donald be the only loser. lol

  18. Here’s what I think; when asked about Carter and his birthday, Vance will probably say something along the lines of why should we care about his birthday and that he’s likely to die soon anyway, because he’s so old, and that it should be good for him to die.

That is exactly the type of person that Vance is.

  19. I’ll make a list of crazy stuff JD says, good okay. Throughout the night. And the copy-paste and add. We can vote on the dumbest in the post.
