Singapore ex-minister gets prison for taking gifts

This is big news in Singapore where ministerial compensation is measured in the millions of US dollars, more than for heads of state like the UK PM or the US President.
The explanation for such high pay has always been that it prevents the temptation of accepting bribes.
The ruling political party, which has never lost its majority since our independence in 1965, has always had a policy of being “whiter than white” i.e. not only being uncorrupt but also maintaining a reputation of being incorruptible.
This scandal follows on the heels of another, in which an up-and-coming minister who served as Speaker of the House of Parliament resigned following the revelation that he was having an affair with another member of the party.
