Thierry Henry says Arsenal got it wrong with Unai Emery and Mikel Arteta

  1. Emery had success elsewhere and was given a fairly short leash but Arsenal weren’t in a good position when he was sacked. It obviously worked out, but they really risked a lot going to Arteta.

Henry didn’t say that but the idea that Emery could have been given more time and achieved the same results isn’t outside the realm of possibility imo.

  2. Emery and Arsenal were never a good match. Doesn’t mean either of them are better or worse. Some things just aren’t a good fit. Eg: Ancelloti at Bayern/Conte at Tottenham.

  3. As an Arsenal fan, I’m tired of this narrative that gets pushed every time Unai Emery gets a “statement” win. Why can’t people understand that Emery was just a bad fit for Arsenal. Not to mention any manager who succeeded Wenger would have struggled anyway especially considering the state of the club at the time and the toxicity and disillusionment among the fanbase. Emery failing at Arsenal doesn’t mean he isn’t a world class coach/manager but it also doesn’t mean that he would’ve been a success if he was given time.

Edit: And yeah, the post is just clickbait and completely misrepresents what Henry actually said. Not surprising it’s a Man Utd fan making the post.

  4. Thierry Henry hated Emery during that time. He’s a legend but very reactionary and emotional

  5. Just watch Aston Villa fallout in the second part of the season. I’ve said it last year once Emerys honeymoon is over they will see how clueless of a manager he is and fall down to 10th place in the PL.

  6. There’s a bit of jealousy here tbh. If not then he’s just falling for the media narrative. Come back to this at the end of the season Henry!

  7. It’s simple, Unai wasn’t getting the results during his transition period. The fans will allow some bumps in the road regarding results, but under Unai there wasn’t any upward trend in progress.

  8. Multiple things are true there.

Emery was not backed the way Arteta has been, that was a failing on the club’s part, but Emery was also not a good fit and could not overcome the culture and establish his own.

  9. This is impossible to say. We don’t know if Emery would have had the same relationship with other aspects of the club. In particular, Arteta has had great success working with his colleagues recruiting, not just good talent, but the right talent. It seems that all aspects of Arsenal are working fluidly right now. Could Emery have done that? We don’t know
