My opinion is that despite the name – the bleached hair, earring and whole deal is pure 1998 East Belfast.
He tells people he's from the Newtownards Road but actually lives with his parents in a nice semi in Ballyhackamore. Still has to call if he won't be home so his mum can lock the front door.
I haven't seen Michael Smiley in much else so I'm not sure of his range, but I swear I knew at least three Tyres O'Flahertys back in the day and his performance is 100% accurate.

Strong divis vibes but here watch the black mirror episode White bear if you wanna see Michael Smiley’s range.
He’s a national treasure. Would love to see him in more
100% agree with you OP, always placed him somewhere around connswater but love the idea he’d be from Ballyhackamore lol
The main question should be is he a Shine guy or Lush, The Met or The Coach. Or could be Traks as he loved a melt and a fight.
Haha I love Michael Smiley especially in Spaced. I didn’t realise till recently he actually was an acid house DJ and bike courier before he became an actor so since a mate of mine told me that I like that character even more
Oi oiiiiii! YOU LAHCKY PEOPOW! Have a banaaaaaana
I loved him as Benny in Luther, he was so funny
Very good in The Lobster, too
He was no stranger to your Ma’s I’d say.
Loved his cameo as zombie tyres in Shaun of the Dead!
Interviewed him when I was 16 at the west Belfast festival. He was doing stand up, great guy. He’s from Holywood. He had a funny joke about it ‘oh you think yez had it hard over here in the west. At the height of the troubles we couldn’t get aubergines for love nor money.’
Aye id say he’d be more of an East boy. Still have a wee rave crossing traffic lights now sometimes cuz of him.
