Dumped salmon turns island’s coastline into ‘toxic wasteland’ – The Times

Absolutely disgusting with a disgusting video – can't even imagine the smell

An island beauty spot has been turned into a “toxic wasteland” with rotting and diseased fish being dumped illegally next to dunes, footage shot by undercover investigators suggests.

The Times disclosed that hundreds of thousands of dead salmon from fish farms were being buried, generating stomach-churning odours, on coastal land on North Uist in the Outer Hebrides three years ago.

The Scottish government revoked Whiteshore Cockles’s dispensation to bury animal waste, ordering the firm to stop the practice by January 31.

However, footage shot in May appears to show large quantities of salmon carcasses continuing to be dumped in open pits on land owned by the company, with liquid waste seeping onto a public beach.

Environmental activists claim that Angus MacDonald, owner of the firm, and two other men threatened and pursued them before blocking their exit with a car and a tractor, leaving them in a state of fear and alarm
