I always supported Afghanistan against Iran, Pakistan, and China, formally the Soviet Union too.
The Taliban can be allies against worse states.
I remember that this was one of the attempts to get closer to the United States, with the understanding that both countries had suffered thanks to terrorism and that this was a common enemy.
Eventually there would be a separation between the two because terrorism had very specific interests and so did the United States.
Hope other countries follow suit. It’s kind of like with the legitimacy of Juan Guiadó – sure, you wish the other guys won, but pretending the indisputable government isn’t the government because you don’t like them is not how you achieve any form of change
