  1. Love when people seem to illogically be hanging on to “there is no price gouging” gaslighting narrative and then later it turns out they were just not discussing the issue in good faith and tell you that we are actually better off we were price gouged

  2. SMH. The worst part isn’t the fact that we’re seeing these headlines.

The worst part is the inhumanity of the causal acceptance of these headlines.

  3. in related news, the government controlled Mega Millions lottery system is raising prices 150%. From $2 a ticket to $5. Because fantasy is more important than reality

  4. If we’re having an open non emotional discussion about this then what are the real options after a disaster? I only see high prices or shortages in the current economic models. What other alternative is there that doesn’t go against rational human behavior and outcomes?

  5. Price gouging is just a pejorative term for allowing the market to determine prices. In a market where there is a major shortage of everyday goods prices should rise because there is high demand for fewer goods. This also signals to other people who may be able to get those goods to the area that it will be worth their time and effort. The opposite of price gouging is price controls which does the opposite and exacerbates the shortage and does not signal to anyone outside the area what supplies are in demand.

  6. If people didn’t raise prices, consumers would hoard things that they fear would become scarce (like gas, milk, etc), leaving none available for others. High prices prevents people from hoarding.

  7. Legacy media is a joke. Go to r/dinafinanser for some independent news that will actually make you money

  8. Actually there is some evidence that price gouging works to fulfill the needs of the market in emergency situations. If the proper channels don’t provide the needs of the people. So lets give a simple example, there are 100 people who need water, not a life or death situation. The proper channels, ie government relief is maxed out. So some of the 100 people are willing to pay more for water, this extra willing to pay incentivizes those who would not normally provide water service/delivery to take action and provide that service.
