  1. All these events in the last few years could be compiled with their news headlines and ominous music for a movie trailer. A movie of apocalypse, a movie starring us.

  2. It’s a difficult decision for people in Florida. I lived there for 2 years and a couple big hurricanes came through.

The first one we evacuated, had the most stressful week of our lives in a shitty Airbnb and we still lost power for 3 days in Atlanta. In the 15 hour bumper-to-bumper drive home, a Tundra rear ended us hard. We both had whiplash and the car got repaired but lost $5k in value. Overall just a completely awful experience.

The next we stayed through announcements like this & didn’t even lose power. We were in a 2nd story apartment in a concrete building and had a relaxing week.

Just saying- I get it. They have seen sensational headline for decades and it hasn’t turned out that way… But if I was living on the ground floor in Tampa I’d be getting to higher ground.

  3. That statement was made by the mayor of Tampa. She was specifically referring to areas under mandatory evacuation orders.

It’s not feasible for an entire third of a state to pack up and leave on short notice. Gas stations run dry. It’s an 8-12 hour drive just to get out of the state under normal traffic conditions, and traffic is stalled. Airports are closing, and even if they weren’t, flights are 5x the cost.

There are parts of the city where there is no mandatory evacuation right now. Imagine trying to decide whether to leave or not, if you’re in one of those areas. It’s not an easy choice.

Just pointing this out because some people will point the finger at Floridians and ask why they didn’t leave, as if life were ever that simple.
