Labour leadership loses conference vote on winter fuel payments

The Labour leadership has lost a motion at the party’s conference in Liverpool that called on ministers to reverse the cuts to winter fuel payments. The defeat is a blow to Downing Street, as the prime minister and his team had repeatedly said during the conference that the move demonstrated that they could be trusted with taxpayers’ money. The vote was carried by a show of hands in the noisy conference hall, with members cheering as the result was announced

  1. Just seen a statement saying that next April pensioners on the OLD pension rate will get £350 rise. Ok, take away the £300 WFA and you have £50 left, minus £10 tax and you have £40 rise for the whole year 2025/6. That is a spread over fifty two weeks of …..drum roll……just less than 80p per week rise. Does that not make you proud that you will have 80pence per week extra. That, by the way is only if you are on a full pension. I cannot believe it!

  2. So labour got into power on a huge majority and you would rightly expect the conference to be buoyed by joy and optimism for the future. But it is the quite the opposite because labour is no longer there on behalf of their members or even carry out the will of the people who elected it but to dictate to us what it will now do, the manifesto a distant memory. Cue collapse of voter naivety, trust has gone from politics as the tories are just the same.

  3. Labour paid Doctors a 20% increase who are some of highest paid workers in the UK. It’s cost the normal working people 9.8 Billion. Labour won’t stop until the UK is a totalitarian authoritarian dictatorship.

  4. "THAT WAS CARRIED" 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏and that's how the great majority of people feel in this country, a respect for our pensioners.
Should have had a vote on all the thousands of pounds accepted in FREEBIES!!!

  5. Does Keith care – silly question – he is just another Labour Party Tory with no real change in mind merely tinkering so as not to upset those in power. Imagine in a country with billions swirling as round we still have poverty! Incredible

  6. I think the UK needs to go back to the Monarchy. Obviously voting for commoners to lead is the greatest mistake they have ever made. It's been more than 800 years since Magna Carta, I think the so called, Power to the people, needs to go back to people who are actually born to lead.

  7. small minded thinking
people who need the money will still get it
it's just not a blanket government donation to energy companies via pensioners anymore
frees up money in the budget for GB Energy, which will make electricity prices cheaper for everyone
