‘Russians invaded my house and held a soldier captive there’ – BBC World Service Documentaries

A family home in eastern Ukraine is transformed from a beacon of joy to a symbol of devastating loss due to war. #BBCEye uses open source intelligence (Osint) techniques to uncover the significance of a house in Vuhledar, recently captured by the Russians, and the destinies of three lives linked to its destruction: a fleeing homeowner, a starving prisoner of war and a Russian soldier.

BBC Eye Investigations’ Number 17: My House of Horrors follows the remarkable story of one family’s home at the centre of Ukraine’s war. In the strategically important city of Vuhledar, the story of this one home reflects Ukraine’s brutal war for survival.

Originally built as the dream home of Marina, her husband and their two children, it was filled with symbols of love, family, and stability – the centre of the young family’s daily life. When Russia attacked in February 2022, their home, their lives, and their world were brutally overturned.

A year later, Oleksii was fighting for survival in the house’s basement. Once an IT graduate, his life took a drastic turn when he was captured by Russian forces, who held him as a prisoner of war (POW) in Marina’s home. Wounded and starving, he prayed for the impossible.

Meanwhile, Oleksii’s father Oleksandr – a prominent music producer who had worked with famous Russian bands – spent weeks desperately searching for his son. He scoured every new POW video released online, hoping to find a trace of Oleksii, but none ever appeared. Still, Oleksandr held onto hope.

Upstairs, Fima, a Russian naval infantry soldier, was using Marina’s home as a base. A former diving enthusiast from Vladivostok, he was soon to become a pinup for Russia’s propaganda war. He filmed himself, under fire, searching through Marina’s house, and even browsing her family photo albums in the rubble…

  1. I like how they try to paint him as a bad guy cause he.. looked at a photo album? "Why didn't you give the captive medical care?".. maybe cause they were trapped in a house under heavy shelling and couldn't leave???

  2. Well didn’t Russia try to agree with them for 10 years? And wasn’t the west the one who ditched Minsk agreements? Istanbul agreements?
    Am I wrong?

  3. This is now a battlefield. It may sound off topic but I chanced on this cool translator that does everything and more of what a translator should have, name is Immersive Translate and one thing that can really help is it’s new feature, which lets you create a custom AI expert for translating anything. Thank me later, it's gold.

  4. 🗣️ ууууууууууураааааа 🗣️ ууууууууууураааааа 🗣️ ууууууууууураааааа 🇷🇺🏆🎖️💪🤲✌️

  5. BBC, please, make the video how Ukrainian military troops are catching people on street and forcibly make them to sign the drafting papers and to be sent unprepared to fronts after a month or two. How come nobody talks that motivation is dropping among ukrainian soldiers, it is impossible to retrieve the borders of 91, the desertions are growing, the Kursk operation will be eventually pointless (holding 800 square meters of insignificant villages is L) and the popularity of Zelensky is dropping?

BBC, there are plenty of materials to talk about corruption and the general public tiredness.

"we want to live" so maybe let's sign a peace treaty? at least try to do something towards ceasing the fire?

P.S to all the possible comments to "you are russian bot"
guys, I am ukrainian and I know people on frontlines. They wish not to give up more lands, not even talking about 91 borders.

Keep listening to Western biased media and pretend that Ukraine is doing fine.

  6. I wish you the media had the same journalistic integrity regarding Palestine… right now this is simply hypocritical evil and double standards human rights

  7. How can you be Russian and support this like she said they never asked to be freed all you did was destroy, take , capture, and kill and then brag about being cold blooded they are so different than we are here in America. I pray Ukraine finds peace and those people feel safe enough to return home

  8. Why don't you go to gaza palastine, there also you can find thousands of houses in even worse condition, and you can also find atleast 40,000 dead people in which atleast 11,000 are children,

You double standard western war propaganda machine

  9. Very confusing by bbc 🤔🤔 he is Ukrainian but then showing born in Russia and showing wearing Russian Army uniforms etc
    Wtfk BBC

    RIP NEW ZEALAND hero

  10. So many kremlin bots in the comments working hard to make 100 rubles posting propaganda to try manipulate the readers into thinking the support for Ukraine is shrinking. Ukraine will be victories no matter how much you try. Glory to heroes 🇺🇦

  11. Who is taking advantage of this war? Certainly not Russians and Ukrainians. Only madness led the two nations to engage in continuous war. Be aware that these two nations come from the same roots and were united in the past. Remember, this war only benefits the creditors and makes both of them worse off. They should not remain easily in the shadow of the illusion of empty promises of prosperity and freedom because in fact this can be achieved independently by fostering unity and cooperation among regional countries without forgetting the history of the past

  12. It never fails to amaze and terrify me that people lose humanity when they are given encouragement to do bad things and told that they were heroes for doing so. That russian marine was built up to be the cold-blooded person when he could have been a decent person, it can be seen in his response to the question of what he thought when he saw Marina’s photos. Putin and his collaborators are demon spawn, no doubt about it
