Aino is forced to marry Väinämöinen after her brother, Joukahainen, lost his fight against Väinämöinen. She hears of this news while fixing a vihta. She’s not looking forward to the marriage because he’s way too old for her. Her mom forces her to put on her fancy clothes (woven by the moon spirit Kuutar), six golden belts and braid her hair with silver threads and put on pearls and golden rings.
Distraught, she runs away from home. She finds herself on a rock in the sea and decides to go for a swim. She slips and drowns. A rabbit witnesses the unfortunate event and runs to Aino’s parents to give them the sad news.
Years later, Väinämöinen spots Aino waving towards him in the sea. She’s become a watery maiden for Ahti’s wife, Vellamo.

A sad story that teaches mothers not to be too harsh on their daughters;)
