I know that lots of universities have overseas ‘schools’, as well as specialist research bases, this might be one of those?
A friend of mine from uni at Bangor, back in the 90s, ended up working for the University of Nottingham, and a few years ago, before Covid, he was sent over to their base in China.
These overseas offshoots raise a lot of money for UK universities.
As for specialist research bases, these could be set up somewhere with very specific conditions related to the area of study.
