can I report a neighbour for leaving their balcony lights on for hours on end at night?

Is it actually illegal (or at least highly unacceptable) for two Russian/Ukrainian-sounding tenants to leave their balcony lights on for pretty much all night? Or should I accept this as the new ‘normal’ in Malta?

They just sit there all night smoking and talking, although thankfully they can barely be heard. But the light is so powerful and beams to my yard, with my bedroom being next to the yard. The beam is so powerful that it illuminates the whole area around my yard, including other flats and yards like mine.

I have trouble sleeping, the slightest sound or light wakes me up and this is causing me to literally go crazy.

The photo doesn’t do much justice, thank the lens and night modes for that.

  1. How do you know that they are Ukrainian or Russian ? If you don’t speak Slavic languages, they could be Serbian, Croatian, Polish. Why so oddly specific ?

  2. It’s only illegal if you’re sure they’re Russian or Ukranian … other nationalities are allowed to keep the light on.

(try a sleeping blindfold or blackout blinds)

  3. Just try to talk to them and explain the situation instead of being an a** and contacting authorities directly. They may not be aware that it’s disturbing anyone.

  4. Do you not have a blackout curtain? But I’d suggest just talking to them and asking. They probably just have issues sleeping or something and stay awake through the night.
