London students fear abandoning courses after TFL suspension of discount applications

  1. For university students: your uni will have a hardship fund you can try applying to help with these extra travel costs.

Councils also often have some emergency support available, but they’re often limited in what you can apply for and I’m going to guess Oyster cards for college students won’t be on the list as they usually travel free. Probably worth contacting your local MP or councillor about it to see if they can get something moving.

I would have hoped the Guardian would have included some tips as it’s Anna Tims who does the consumer champions section doing the article!

  2. seems kind of irresponsible of The Guardian not to mention the continued existence of 34% discounts for students which can be loaded at any London Underground station, but there we are.

  3. “TfL is accepting expired Zip cards for children under 16 until the end of the month, but has told older card holders that they must stump up the full fare until the system allows them to renew their passes.”

This doesn’t make sense. This seems like they’re purposely exploiting the hack to make money, they just know they wouldn’t be able to get away with it if it also applied to children.
