US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin urged Israel to scale back airstrikes in and around Beirut, citing high civilian casualties. He advocated for transitioning towards negotiations to allow civilians on both sides to return home. Tens of thousands of people have fled Beirut’s southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold, since Israeli strikes began three weeks ago. Austin also addressed concerns about North Korea possibly sending troops to Russia to support the war in Ukraine but couldn’t confirm the reports. South Korea claims 1,500 North Korean troops have been sent, though NATO says there’s no evidence yet of their involvement. Both Russia and North Korea deny the allegations.
