“For the people who fled Lebanon, they have gone from one battlefield to another. We need to do everything we can to provide them with the psycho-social support that they need, because many of them have faced humiliation during their trip, they have suffered extortion. But also we must not forget the people in northwest Syria who have been suffering for many many years.”

STORYLINE:
More Syrians are continuing to arrive in northwest Syria after fleeing the fighting in Lebanon.

The U.N. deputy regional humanitarian coordinator for Syria David Carden said Monday that approximately 3,000 newly displaced Syrians have arrived in northwest Syria from Lebanon.

Many are returning refugees who fled the war in Syria and who Carden said “have gone one from one battlefield to another.”

“If their numbers increase as they probably will, it’s going to put an increased burden on the services that have already being provided to the displaced here in a very tight funding environment,” Carden added.

The cross-border flow was a striking reversal in fortunes given that Lebanon is still hosting more than one million Syrian refugees who fled the war in their country that began in 2011.

While touring the camp in Maara Tamasrin in Idlib and observing aid distribution by the World Food Programme (WFP), Carden stressed the importance of providing newly displaced individuals with “psycho-social support”.

Carden concluded his visit amid mounting tensions, with reports of airstrikes in the area, underscoring the ongoing volatility that exacerbates the plight of those seeking refuge.

At a nearby center for the U.N.’s refugee agency UNHCR, displaced people were seen registering for assistance, a critical step in accessing support they desperately need.

According to UNHCR, the ongoing conflict in Lebanon has so far led to an influx of over 270,000 people seeking safety in Syria – 70% of them Syrian and 30% Lebanese.
