China-Taiwan Tensions: U.S. and Canadian warships sailed through the sensitive Taiwan Strait on Sunday, less than a week after China conducted a new round of war games around the island, prompting Beijing to denounce the mission as “disruptive.” The U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet stated that the destroyer USS Higgins and the Canadian frigate HMCS Vancouver made a “routine” transit through waters where high-seas freedom of navigation and overflight apply under international law. The transit demonstrated the commitment of the United States and Canada to uphold freedom of navigation for all countries. The U.S. rejected any assertion of sovereignty or jurisdiction inconsistent with navigational rights, while China’s Eastern Theatre Command claimed its forces monitored and warned the ships, asserting that the actions of the U.S. and Canada were disruptive to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. China conducted war games the previous Monday, citing them as a warning to “separatist acts,” which drew condemnation from Taiwan and the U.S. The last joint mission by the U.S. and Canadian navies occurred in November of last year. China claims jurisdiction over the 180 km wide waterway, which Taiwan and the U.S. dispute, asserting that it is an international waterway. Taiwan’s government maintains that only the island’s people can determine their future.
