On October 13th, 2024, the Cyprus Society of Greater Philadelphia marked the solemn 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus with a Memorial Service held at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Philadelphia.

The event also honored Cyprus’s Independence Day and paid tribute to the heroes who gave their lives defending the island. The Consul General of Cyprus in New York, Mr. Michalis Firillas, delivered the keynote address, reminding attendees of the ongoing struggle for justice and freedom for Cyprus.

In his speech, he emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to end the illegal occupation of Cyprus and called for unity in the pursuit of peace.

Also present were prominent leaders of the Greek and Cypriot communities, including Kyriakos Papastylianou, President of the Cyprus Federation, and Tasoula Manaridis, Secretary General of the Cyprus Federation. Paul Kotrotsios, President of AHEPA Chapter 26 of Greater Philadelphia, represented the Supreme President of the AHEPA organization, Mr. Savvas Tsivicos.

The event was spearheaded by Dr. Stelios Tsinontidis, whose dedication brought the community together to commemorate the invasion and reaffirm the commitment to justice for Cyprus.

Dr. Tsinontidis poignantly reminded all that the memory of the occupation must endure to prevent further losses for Hellenism. Rev. Anastasios Bourantas, Dean of the Cathedral, welcomed guests and led prayers, including the traditional mnemosyno (memorial prayer) and artoklasia (blessing of the bread), honoring the fallen heroes of Cyprus.

Following the service, the Cyprus Society of Greater Philadelphia hosted a reception, offering the opportunity for attendees to connect with members of the community and Saint George parish. As the Greek Cypriot community continues to fight for justice and freedom for Cyprus, the event served as a powerful reminder that the struggle is far from over.

As was underscored throughout the service, “Our fight continues until we achieve justice and freedom for Cyprus!”
