On October 23, 2024, #TeamEurope, in collaboration with the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF), hosted the opening night of “ZIFF Goes Mainland” at Alliance Française in Dar es Salaam. The event featured the screening of Goodbye Julia, an award-winning Sudanese film. The program, launched on October 19, will hold additional screenings in Mwanza, Iringa, Arusha, and Bagamoyo, at universities and cultural institutions.

For the 4th year, the European Union (EU) and its Member States, in collaboration with the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF), hosted the opening night of  “ZIFF Goes Mainland” on Tuesday evening at Alliance Française. The program, which was launched on October 19 during a press conference, aims to expand ZIFF’s reach to various regions of Tanzania, as well as allow an encounter of cultures among European embassies and young people in Tanzania, primarily focusing on educational and cultural settings.

The opening night featured the award-winning Sudanese drama Goodbye Julia, which won Best Feature Film at this year’s ZIFF Awards. Set in Khartoum during the pre-2011 separation of South Sudan, the film explores the complex relationship between northern and southern Sudanese communities. The narrative centers on two women whose experiences reflect the broader societal divisions in their country. The screening was followed by a frank and animated discussion on humanity, justice and cultural apporaches.

In addition to screenings in Dar es Salaam, “ZIFF Goes Mainland” will also take place in Mwanza, Iringa, Arusha, and Bagamoyo, with a primary focus on engaging student audiences. The program aims to provide educational and cultural opportunities through film, encouraging discussions and critical analysis among viewers.

Like in previous years, the festival will also dedicate a special night to Ukraine, demonstrating solidarity with its people amidst Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified military aggression.

Marc Stalmans, EU Head of Cooperation, spoke about the strong partnership between the EU and ZIFF. He noted that the collaboration includes not only financial support but also technical assistance and networking opportunities for cultural actors in the film industry.

“Culture is a powerful tool to reach people with positive and transformative messages,” Stalmans stated. “Thanks to ZIFF and our Member States, we will leverage films to facilitate exchanges among cultures and enrich discussions.”
