RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – Republican Vice-Presidential nominee JD Vance returned to Reno Wednesday, only two weeks before the election.
Vance, a U.S. senator from Ohio, tried to connect with voters and bashed Vice President Kamala Harris.
“I grew up in a family where times were often tight,” said Vance. “I understand what people are going through and how much Kamala Harris’ broken leadership has failed to deliver prosperity to the American people.”
Vance targeted Nevada’s working class and labor force.
“We are going to be the best fighters for the Nevada tourism industry that you have ever seen, in the White House,” he said. “And the biggest part of that of course is to make sure that Nevada workers are not paying taxes on tips.”
The state has the highest concentration of tipped workers in the country and averages 25 waiters and waitresses per 1,000 jobs.
“It is going to allow a lot of Nevadans to keep more of their hard-earned money. By the way, I think it is about 65% of the workers in Nevada who work for tips are moms,” he added.
“I don’t think that is a silver bullet fix for the economy or people in general, but I think it is fine,” said one Washoe County voter.
Vance echoed the campaign’s position on tackling the affordable housing crisis in Nevada.
“I think especially in the state of Nevada, we’ve got a ton of federal land. It’s not being used for national parks. It’s not being used for anything, why don’t we build some homes on that land and give American citizens a place to live in their own country.”
Some of the supporters in attendance voiced their support for Trump’s plan for the economy.
“Because of the economy, everything is so expensive. You go to the grocery store, you pay $80 and you put it into two bags,” said a supporter. “Everything is so expensive, you can’t afford housing. There’s a lot of homeless people, a lot of homeless vets that can’t afford housing.”
The Republican vice presidential nominee explained the campaign’s plans to lower energy costs, along with approaches to immigration and putting American home buyers first.
“Donald Trump will follow in the White House to make the American Dream of homeownership more affordable again,” Vance said. “American homes for the American people. Not for illegal aliens who do not deserve to be in the country in the first place.”
There are 13 days until the election and candidates are urging people to cast their votes at the polls. Early voting ends on Nov. 1 and the election is set for Nov. 5.
