Úlfar Lúðvíksson, police chief in Suðurnes, says that the traffic into Grindavík after barrier-free access to the town was opened on Monday was not that much.
“There is not a lot of tourist traffic into the town and it is not apparent that there has been an increase in the number of people staying in the town,” Lúðvíksson says to mbl.is.
He says that last night it is believed that people stayed in 32 houses, and that no issues inside the town came to the attention of the police.
“The weekend will definitely be a question mark. You rather hope that citizens will have some interest in visiting the town, but it also depends on the weather,” says the police chief in Suðurnes.
On the same day that the town opened, Lúðvíksson criticized that the provision of information to tourists intending to enter the town had been lacking and mentioned in that regard that no information signs had been put up.
“This lack of signage has been remedied to a certain extent. There are warning signs when you drive into town.”
He adds that work continues on issues regarding information provision in collaboration with the Grindavík Committee.
